Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Age range: 8-11

When Eddie's parents are struck down by a strange disease that turns them a rather peculiar shade of yellow, it is decided that he should go and stay with Mad Uncle Jack and Even-Madder Aunt Maud at Awful End.

Philip Ardagh's supremely daft and extremely funny novel is set in a terribly smelly 19th century world that children will love. Ardagh captures the stench and stealth of the times, turning what could have been a straightforward adventure story into a delightfully pungent, utterly ridiculous but unbelievably gripping adventure story.--Susan Harrison

'It would be a sad spirit that didn't find this book hilarious' - Financial Times 'Sophisticated... extremely silly... turning nonsense into a fine art' - Sunday Telegraph --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

My dad bought it for my brother but I got a hold of it first and it was so brilliant that he read it next so my brother has not got his hands on it yet. It is very very very funny and exciting and is one of the best books I have ever read. I read it in two days it was so good. I cannot wait until the next adventure.

I think if I was twelve I would probably love this book and give it five stars. As it is, I'm not and I didn't find it very funny. Some bits were quite amusing, but too derivative of Monty Python for me. I also got increasingly annoyed with the constant stream of 'fascinating facts' that the author would bung down our throats every five seconds. Either write a novel and incorporate the factual elements with more subtlety or write a comic novel, but this is an uncomfortable hybrid of the two.

I love Harry Potters adventures. I have read them all. I also like Eddie Dickens' adventure in Awful End. Unlike JK Rowling, Philip Ardagh plays around with the way he tells the story as well as giving us the story itself. I like that because he is very funny. This book is FANTASTIC! I hope he writes more Eddie Dickens adventures soon.

Spectacular Start.
Forgive the five stars, which always look to me like over-excited hyperbole, but Awful End really is one of the funniest things I've ever read. Read more

Odd and confusing book
I thought the title says it all, it was an awful end, and the middle and beginning were not that good either. Read more

a funny, chaotic, amusing and strange book.

Tries a bit too hard
Awful End is an amusing read, but like far too much of current children's fiction it doesn't lead anywhere. Read more

A very VERY funny book
I haven't read anything as funny as Awful End for a very long time. I couldn't put this book down - and it wasn't because of chewing gum stuck to the cover! Read more
