My son, Callum, got this book as a Christmas present and it goes everywhere with him (including to bed). If he doesn't have it to hand we get a chorus of "dig dig digger" until it's found. In fact the reason I'm on the site is to order a replacement as he took his book to nursery and failed to bring it home and it's gone awol - we have had many tears.
One of his first words was tractor but he has now branched out to diggers, lorries, dustbin lorries, cranes etc all of which he can recognise on the streets and attempt to say. Walking past a building site or driving along in the car has never been so exciting. The rhymes are catchy and easy to repeat and Callum is picking up more and more of them, including joining in for the 'shhh' at the end. I can't rate this book more highly - both Callum and I think it's fantastic.

This is the most fantastic book. Elliot was about 1 1/2 and did not sit through an entire story until we got this from Auntie Julie. He loved it from day one. This artwork is fantastic - simple and very strong. The rhymes should be sung to Daddy's taking us to the zoo (I think) and he started joining in really quickly. Now if we're out and see one of the vehicles he starts singing. A must have for all kids, as is Emergency 999 by the same author.

I was very pleased on receiving this to see that it is printed on nice thick card which will stand up to rough handling by my one year old grandson. The book feels robust and with it's shiny card and bright colours is immediately attractive.

The pages immediately held the attention of the little boy with their bold designs. I also like the way that all the pages are tabbed, making it easier for him to turn the page.

It is a mystery to me why boys are drawn to pictures of heavy vehicles so early in their lives - the enthusiastic response to this book was quite remarkable and I am very pleased I got it for him. Instant hit! There are not many pages in it but it doesn't seem to matter, as he quite like just holding the book and carrying it around with him.

A brilliant book for a small child - you can't go wrong with it in my opinion.

A sturdy book with descriptions in a rhythmic verse format and cheerful bright illustrations. Well received and fun to read with an enthusiastic audience. Also its sturdiness means it can double as tunnel or wall to be knocked down if the recipient is that way inclined.
As one reviewer wisely pointed out a lot depends upon the inclination of the child. Worked in our case, but we had the Grandparent Advantage (ie anything grandparents bring must be investigated)

Finally, a book about diggers and trucks that's almost as tough as the vehicles themselves. We've got one tractor-mad toddler in the family and this seemed like an obvious choice to keep him amused during visits and it might even withstand repeated viewings. Each of the six pages is made from thick board with the edge formed into a giant tab - so little hands in a hurry can quickly get from any one page to any other page without having to visit everywhere in between. The pages are glossy and (if you're quick) wipe-clean if you suffer one of those near-inevitable juice and cake pile-ups. The illustrations themselves are bright and colourful, as you'd expect, and there's enough variation of vehicles to keep some interest going - but this is obviously a truck-lovers delight and infants who are less vehicle-obsessed won't get very much from it (we soon discovered).

My son is two and currently obsessed by most things vehicular, particularly tractors and diggers, so I really thought this book would be perfect for him. Sadly though he's really not shown any interest in it. I'm not sure if it's a bit young for him or if he's been spoiled by books with sound effects in built, but this has been a bit of a flop. However it is nicely designed and my son's lack of interest may not be reflective of all boys of his age, so I have given it three stars.

This book my son enjoyed when he was a toddler. It has all things with wheels enjoyed by little boys - fire engines, trucks, diggers... There is some narrative and the illustrations appeal to little ones and can provoke further discussion. Not such an enjoyable read for an adult as The Gruffalo for example, but not a book that you'd want to hide either...

Thus book has been a great favourite with all my grandchildren and I have been reading it constantly as each child has come along! The bold illustrations and colours are attractive to little ones and the wonderful rhythmic verse with each illustration just bounces along and is loved by all the children. They love to join in with the last line on each page - 'they work all day'. There are lots of vehicles and features to find on each page and other stories can be woven around the illustrations.I couldn't recommend this book highly enough for any small child who loves big machines. My only regret is that it is no longer published in a hardback version - I'm not sure how long a paperback will last, given the heavy use it will receive!
