Away We Go 28 Mar 2010
By Spider Monkey HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
`Away We Go' is a nice little film from Sam Mendes that manages to be both funny and poignant. This follows a couple, Burt and Verona, who are about to have a baby and who are looking for a place to bring it up and settle down as a family. They travel around various places in America and visit assorted friends in their search for a place to call home. This has great performances from the two lead actors and they have a great on-screen chemistry together. I found myself laughing out loud many times throughout and this is definitely one of those films with a quirky, kooky edge to it. This also has a indie film feel to it, which only adds to it overall and it also has a great soundtrack which adds to certain scenes and compliments it perfectly. Burt and Verona feel confused and lost in their lives and it is only by travelling around that they realise that others feel the same way they do and have their own individual issues and crosses to bear. This leads up to a satisfying conclusion and although it is a little predictable, it leaves a warm glow. This is an inoffensive, feel good movie and there is nothing wrong with that; I enjoyed it more than I thought I would and recommend it for a chilled out evening in.

Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.

This film is a real breath of fresh air from Sam Mendes, and you get the impression that he really enjoyed making it. It's not an out and out comedy, although there are some hilarious moments in there, and although it's romantic, it's not the normal boring pukefest of boy mets girl blah blah! Burt and Verona are way past that, and facing something that lots of couples face, the what to do with your life, and where to make it...and it's a really fun journey how they get there.

They meet some great characters they meet on the way, Alison Janney is hilarious, as is Maggie Gyllenhaal but this isn't just a laugh out loud comedy, it's beautifully touching, poigniant, warm film that you leave with a little tear in your eye but feeling better about the world. After all, life is a lot about the journey.

Not as funny as the credits/reviews make it out to be; distinctly average film though mildly amusing. Directed by Sam Mendes but not one of his finest moments.

Very enjoyable
A pleasureable, comical journey during pregnancy is what this movie sets out to do and does it very well. Found it great to watch and relax to.

One of the most enoyable, feel-good, instantly adorable films around.
Sam Mendes already has an amazing CV, with the likes of the superb American Beauty and the more recent, equally powerful Revolutionary Road. Read more
