Book Description

2 Oct 1997

In this comprehensive book, Lama Surya Das provides a bridge between East and West, past, present and future, making sacred and profound Tibetan teachings clear and easily accessible for anyone who wants to lead a more enlightened and sane life.

Utilizing the unique Buddhist guidelines embodied in the Noble Eight Fold Path and the traditional Three Enlightenment Trainings of Virtue, Meditation and Wisdom, he elucidates the tried and true path of spiritual transformation - including key principles such as karma, rebirth and mind-training, as well as the highest, most secret teaching of Tibet, Dzogchen. In this wonderful marriage of the practical and the profound, Lama Surya Das reveals how sacred wisdom can be integrated into our busy lives. He offers a unique approach to the comprehensive wisdom of ancient Tibetan teachings on conscious living and dying and shows that the power of the Buddha is resting within us all.

Drawing on Buddhist spirituality and wisdom, this is a view of the world written for Western seekers.

I have read this book several times till today and I think I will reread it, because it simply has offered to me a new perspective about the meaning of life and our daily issues. This perspective was at the beginning in some ways quite new to me, but I noticed that from the beginning on, it started to change my life,my behavior patterns and help me a great deal. This book does not only provide an insight to how we live our lives and what make us suffer here but also encourages and shows us how we can get in touch with our innate nature , purify our minds and improve our ways to live "our lives". This is exciting and worth to try.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tibetan Buddhism for Beginners 9 Mar 2002
Lama Surya Das does a good job of introducing the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism to the West. Many people see Buddhism as an exotic Eastern tradition without any relevance to our lives here and now. However, one need not embrace Buddhism to gain much from Buddhist concepts. This book is a little soft on certain concepts (like reincarnation). However, this book is meant for one not already deeply involved in the practice of Buddhism, so maybe it's better that way. I also highly recommend "Open Your Mind, Open Your Life: A Book of Eastern Wisdom" by Taro Gold. Excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars A joy to read a clear and sympathetic guide 25 Aug 1999

Although I have not ready widely concerning the topic of buddhism, I was pleased that this book was recommended to me by one of the staff at a bookshop in Central London. It is, in my view, a satisfying guide to the way in which buddhism can assist day to day with problems that I face. I would recommend this book to anyone with a skimpy knowledge of the subject and a yet an interest.

Buddhism is still a mystery in the West. It is "organized" in ways we don't fathom. It's theology is not neatly contained in a Bible. It has countless traditions, from India to Tibet to China to Japan. Lama Surya Das, a Jew from New York, not only spent his life taking in the Buddhist experience, living in the East and digesting religious scripts. He also crystallized this experience into a form that we can use. He has obviously not lost touch with the West; he returns to it with a message.

That message can do no harm. It can only help "seekers" who are looking for an emotional base in a hectic world. Or those looking for peace in a hostile environment.

Best, he brings with him the Eastern notion that you don't have to lose your current religion to adopt Buddhist philosophy. (In many places in the East, people indeed claim several religions at once.)

I recommend the audio tape. What you may lose in detail on philosophy, you gain in listening to the author's soothing voice, and his coaching in basic meditation.

Lama Surya Das, is a Jewish kid from Long Island, NY who wondered like many of us about the big questions of life. His journey of discovery is described in vivid, colourful detail as a lifelong venture where the answers ultimately lie within each of us. Insights abound and the reader is left understanding in practical terms much about the nature of spirituality as simply an everyday part of all of us that can and must fit in with our livelyhoods as they are. Its about striking a personal balance between our physical and spiritual selves without the need to retreat from the world we each live in. This is not a how to manual in the conventional sense. It offers simple straightforward methods of inquiry through reflection to discover our own innate wisdom, connect that wisdom to our own present realities and develop personal action plans that can begin now without packing up and moving to Nepal to find a Guru. In fact, through this book, I realized that I am my own ultimate Guru and can act each day at a pace that is comfortable to me. Fullfillment is about the here and now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone needs to read this book! 28 Aug 2000
If everyone read this book, the world would be a better place to live. You can become a better you and look at things in a completely different light. Buddhism removes itself from the judgement and fear of Christianity, it just enlightens.
I have read several books by the Dalai Lama and this book provides more references and gives a less general synopsis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, you don't sound like a Buddhist.... 19 Mar 1998

Superbly written and told -- both informative and entertaining. Lama Surya Das shares his personal search for enlightenment while teaching the basics of Buddhism in a way that is relevant to readers in Western society. How did this Jewish boy from New York end up becoming Lama Surya Das? You'll have to listen to the tape to hear! Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing short of fantastic 18 Aug 2009
I have read countless boks on Buddhism and meditation, but this is by far the most accessable and understandable book I have ever read.

Lama Surya Das is one of the foremost American Lamas in the Buddhist tradition, described by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama as the Western Lama. He has spent 35 years studying Zen, vipassana, yoga, and Tibetan Buddhism with the great masters of Asia, including the Dalai Lama's own teachers.

This makes Lama Surya Das extremely qualified to teach Buddhism and he does is brilliantly. I have been practicing Buddhism for several years now, but reading this book has changed my life in more ways than I can describe.

My passion for the Buddhist faith is greater than ever before, I really can't put into words what this book has done for me. I take inspiration from this book every day, I know I will read it again and again.

I have recommended it to everybody, friends, family and even a lady in the local Morrisons!!

The book is amazing and all I can say it BUY IT, you won't regret it!!
