I notice that in a bodywork class people take entirely different things away depending on how their understanding has developed up to that point . I took very little from this book despite practicing bodywork for 7 years .
The main areas of interest for me in this book were the quotes from scientific research .
I found the authors instructions too vague or perhaps to subtle? to follow.
I didn't find any value in the case studies , all they more or less say for example is , I had two missing discs and three collapsed vertebrae...ect ect , I went to Dr Kaparo and she sorted me out .
This does seem to make it look like a book of self promotion ,not helped by name dropping ..Krishnamurti , Thicc Nhat Hanh ,
Vanda Scaravelli . In relation to V Scaravelli she implies she was her main student ,"If I had been limited to the hourly sessions she gave other students ."...ect . I believe Vandas main student was Diane Long.
You could also get the impression that she coined the word Somatics , I believe that one was Thomas Hanna
On the other hand this is an extremely difficult subject to give people an understanding of through the written word and maybe the authors talent lies more in hands on teaching , perhaps she is trying to convey something that is too subtle to communicate except through touch .
Most helpful to my practice outside of classes has been Feldenkrais and Hana Somatics which have in simple movements given me moments of inspiration and a better understanding of how the body works .

The True SECRET to Conscious Living 22 Jan. 2013
By BEN - Published on
Format: Paperback
I started to have back problems after an injury at UPS working in 1989. I lived with it until 2009 when I had disc surgery.
In 2010 I started to have problems again .....
At the end of 2010 I was in yet another work injury, I had an impingement on my right shoulder -- surgery assisted but left me needing rehab and again on pain meds.

After 20 years of traditional medicine: I don't believe in traditional medicine techniques as medication to pain is an instant development to ANOTHER problem.
Medication makes me nutty and numb, as a mother I can not be nutty nor numb.

In 2012 - 12 months ago I was referred to a magnificent woman Dr. Risa Kaparo for this is issue. Tired of acupuncture (I hate needles), tired of physical therapy - PT therapists had taught me much about the mechanics of my body but appx. one to two hours after a PT session or back massage I was in pain, again. Thus, I pursed one hour sessions weekly with Dr. Risa Kaparo gratefully I have not had back issues in the last 11+ months. In August 2012 I severed my finger and again decided to see Risa for rehab after surgery to reattach the finger. I am typing with that hand currently.
I Recommend EVERYONE Try it! [...]
In her book she states: "in dealing with back pain, the approach of conventional medicine attempts to resolve the problem through mechanical exercise, surgery or medication, by eliminating the unwanted, localized sensations of pain. From the perspective of Somatic Learning, as you learn to utilize feeling and sensation as feedback, you become an open, learning oriented, system. You become more self-sensing and self-organizing, transforming your structure and functioning--in a way that eases the pressure, and allows the organism to follow its own natural course toward healing and self-renewal, so there is no problem to fix."

She does not over exaggerate her work -- it is true! Following the practice of Mindful Embodiment I am able with sensing my pain (physical and emotional) to use it as a tool to differentiate the pain and breathe into it -- relieving it -- by just breathing. Back pain is the worst, it numbs the mind and with pills for the pain numb it even further. I am now pill and pain free. Thank you Dr. Risa... Now that I have the book and DVD I can not wait further expand the possibilities of your work beyond pain management to the possibilities of living in the NOW with life as a gift (even the pains life brings about). Opening to the gravity wave 28 Mar. 2013
By Norman Morse - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
I was a bit disappointed by all the stories and references the book starts with. I think i was in too much of a hurry... i ultimately slowed down and savored them more as i kept reading. However once I got to the meat of the book and actually started to practice the exercises I was very suprised by the subtle yet powerful effects I experienced in both my body and my consciousness.

This Work Is So Important 4 Jun. 2012
By Jonathan Eastman - Published on
Format: Paperback
This is book is so important for this time where so many people are overworked, unhealthy, and out of balance. Without health we don't have the freedom to live the lives we want, and Risa teaches how we can activate whole body-mind healing at a time when just about everyone needs it more than ever. A real gem, this book provides a cutting edge approach to some of our society's biggest problems: poor physical, mental, and emotional health. Thank you, Risa!

This book transcends the how to of Yoga to an inspiration of how to live a more conscious, fulfilling and rewarding life. I am reminded that the quality of my attention as a whole organism changes everything! Each chapter is more compelling than the next and I experienced these teachings as a precious gift in my life.
