Product Description

Review

""The existence and role of subtle, vital energies in the body known in Tibetan as 'lung' remain unknown by modern science, for they are most directly revealed through first-person experience. In his new book, ""Awakening the Sacred Body, ""Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche clearly explains various methods for refining and utilizing these energies, or 'winds, ' to enhance one's spiritual practice and awaken the body and mind. This is a valuable contribution to bringing the contemplative sciences of Tibet to the modern world."" -- B. Alan Wallace, author of "Mind in the Balance"

Product Description

Awakening the Sacred Body brings the ancient art of Tibetan breathing practices to the mainstream. Teacher Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche outlines the theory and process of two powerful meditations - the Nine Breathings of Purification and the Tsa Lung movements - that can help you change the way you think, feel and experience the world.

The simple methods presented in Awakening the Sacred Body and on the accompanying DVD focus on clearing and opening your energetic centers to allow the natural human qualities of love, compassion, joy and equanimity to bloom. These practices, which bring the mind and breath together with specific body movements, can help you connect to your inner wisdom and achieve a relaxed yet aware state of mind.

Letting go 17 July 2011
Format:Paperback
I enjoyed this book very much and learned a lot from it. But I especially liked doing the practice on the DVD - I just love it. It is simple, enjoyable and beneficial. Practising mostly every day I feel a great benefit - calm-energy-acceptance of what comes in the day ahead and self awareness.

Clear, concise and very useful 24 Jan 2011
By Boon L. Kwan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have studied a number of breathing practices (pranayama and taoist Qigong) but I found that this book was succinct and clear in its exposition (great editor!) and the practices are gentle but quite powerful. They are helpful for someone like me that needs a bit of structure in their practice, rather than being told just to sit and "follow my breathing".

I especially liked its emphasis on the chakras which one can hopefully begin to experience first hand, rather than as theoretical constructs. The DVD was very helpful also as I was able to see the hand positions rather than figure out the description in words. I have been recommending this to my friends and am keen to look at some of his other works on sound meditation and dreams.

Don't be dissuaded by the scanned pages for the "look inside", there are a lot of practices with diagrams, with different emphases, beyond the theory. Whoever had the bright idea of scanning 5 pages of blank pages meant for "Practice Notes" obviously wasn't doing their job with mindfulness...

One of the Few Truly Accessible Books on Tibetan Energy Practices 3 May 2011
By L. Erickson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I can only echo the high praise of the reviews already posted here, and add some more background and details, for those interested. This book is an accessible and engaging book and DVD package detailing several core breath and energy-based meditation practices from the Tibetan Bon tradition. Tenzin Rinpoche is a renowned teacher of these practices, and founder of the Ligmincha Institute, dedicated to the preservation of these teachings, as well as other aspects of Tibetan culture. He has an engaging and down-to-earth teaching style, which makes this book exceptional in its area - few books have been written on Tibetan energy practices that do not require prerequisite knowledge. This is a book anyone could pick up and relate to thanks to Tenzin Rinpoche's gift for connecting the energy practices with our everyday emotions and situations.

Bon Buddhism is unique, in that it is not officially part of the usually recognized four main branches of Tibetan Buddhism. Bon was the religion of pre-Buddhist Tibet, before the legendary Padmasambhava brought Buddhist teachings from India into Tibet. Although Bon influences can be seen in all branches of Tibetan Buddhism, it is most closely related to the Nyingma school, especially the teachings on dzogchen, or primordial awareness. This primordial awareness or 'space' is our natural state, within which all other aspects of existence reside, including all of our own mental, emotional, and physical experiences.

The breath and energy practices included in Awakening the Sacred Body are meant to help us see and release all that is blocking us from directly experiencing ourselves as dzogchen. It details several core practices, including:

- The Nine Breathings of Purification: Breath-based meditations focused on releasing energies related to the 'three poisons' - anger, attachment and ignorance - from the corresponding three subtle body energy channels.

- The Five Tsa Lung 'Outer' Exercises: Breath and movement based exercises centered around opening and clearing the 5 chakras (energy centers) in this system. 'Lung' or 'wind' is the word used to describe the energy that moves through the energy channels and centers within the Bon system.

- Inner Tsa Lung 'Inner' Exercises: Also based on the 5 chakras, but more breath than movement-based.

- Secret Tsa Lung Exercises: Color-based visualization meditations on the 5 chakras.

Note that it is common in the Bon tradition, as well as Vajrayana Buddhist traditions, for teachings to be divided into 'outer', 'inner' and 'secret' teachings.

Practitioners of other breath and chakra based practices such as kundalini yoga or qi-gong will find much that is familiar here. Alternate nostril breathing, patterned inhales and exhales, movements and colors corresponding to chakras, etc. are all part of the practices. The main difference from the Hindu based 7-chakra system that is more commonly known in the West, is that these practices work with a 5-chakra system - crown, throat, heart, navel, and the 'secret' chakra, four finger-widths below the navel, roughly corresponding to the 2nd or sacral chakra in other traditions. The three main channels of the subtle body, used in the Nine Breathings meditation, connect there, and run up to the crown chakra. The colors used are also different - red, white and sky blue are associated with the three channels, and green and yellow/gold are added in the chakra exercises.

You do not need any prior knowledge of energy practices or chakras to begin working with the material in this book however. Between the book and DVD, it is described and shown in detail. And as I've mentioned, Tenzin Rinpoche is excellent at pulling these practices out of the esoteric realm and into the practical, making them relevant to what many of us feel and experience in our everyday lives. If you are interested in energy-based practices, I highly recommend this book.

Practical 2 May 2011
By Vern Kelly - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book teaches a complete meditation approach. It is the doorway of the body, so it basically teaches a series of breathing exercises, most paired with physical movements to clear the Tibetan equivalent of the chakras. This book is concise and easy to read, the method is straight forward. I am not a Buddhist or particularly evolved but I have tried numerous meditation styles and for me most were too free form, mostly I would just sit trying not to think about an issue or problem, this method begins by focusing on an issue or problem and then uses it to enter open awareness, it works.
