This collection has more 'bite' than it's predecessor. 16 Nov. 2009

This was a nice little collection of Paranormal romance quickies. For some reason even though there were six stories here, the stories didn't seem anywhere as short as the ones released earlier this year as Midnight Cravings: Racing the Moon\Mate of the Wolf\Captured\Dreamcatcher\Mahina's Storm (Silhouette Nocturne). And even though the hook-ups are still quick, there was enough meat to most of the stories I actually found several that I really liked among these previously e-published Nocturne Bites. All of the stories are still available seperately on Kindle and through eHarlequin, but if even more than one of these sound intriguing the book is a better deal.

1. Return of the Beast - Lisa Renee Jones - Demon hunter Ryder is drawn to return to his old home town only to discover that the demons who ended his human existence are once again plaguing the town. But more surprisingly, he finds Alexis, the woman whose acceptance can tame his inner beast. -- Not a lot of time for too much set up in a story this short, but I actually quite liked it quite a lot, Jone's manages to pull a fair bit of emotion from Ryder on his return to home and his guilt about finding his mate so easily, when other older Knights are still struggling. Those readers of Jone's Knights of White Nocturne series will recognized cameos by a couple of series regulars.(4 stars)

2. Mortal Enemy, Immortal Lover - Olivia Gates - I think that Gate's offering is supposed to be an intro to a new series. A hybrid immortal discovers that the `human' woman he thought to be out of his reach is actually an enemy who seeks his destruction. I also liked this one, the history and the loneliness of the immortal hooked me. The physical connection between the `enemies' was way over the top combustible and where the drama of their consummation might have been too much in a longer book, it made for a really steamy short. (3.5 stars)

3. Claws of the Lynx - Linda 0. Johnson - A female member of the shape shifting Alpha Force, assigned a mission to retrieve stolen info which would compromise the effectiveness of the team is paired with her former lover in denial about her abilities - This one was okay, but then again, even as much as I like shifters and special ops romances, Johnson's longer Alpha Force offering didn't grab me, so if you are a fan you may like it even more.(3 stars)

4. Wilderness - Barbara J Hancock - A psychic woman frees an imprisoned werewolf destined to be a lab rat. - This one was probably my favorite of the stories, just because the woman - psychic abilities aside - was just so normal and watching her make the effort to do the right thing despite her tremendous fears made it easy root for her and rejoice when she get the happily ever after that she deserves with the also likeable hero.(4.5 stars)

5. Honor Calls - Caridad Piniero - Expanding her Calling series, Piniero's tale features the upright Detective Jesus Hernadez from Darkness Calls who meets a woman who will challenge his rigid need to adhere to the rules. - This was a nice little intro to the pair who will get a full length story in the future. (4 stars)

6. Shadow Lover - Lydia Parks - A vamp watches from the shadows knowing that should he attempt a connection his beast will destroy the object of his affection. This was my least favorite of the stories, there was nothing about the introduction to the vamp which made me feel sorry for him, add to that a lack of connection with the heroine and it made it hard to root for their HEA. Will satisfy your paranormal craving - Olivia Gates Mortal Enemy, Immortal Lover 24 Jan. 2010
By Marilyn Shoemaker - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback

Olivia Gates two characters Desiree and Javed literally explode off the pages with their shared passion in Mortal Enemy, Immortal Lover.

This was my first reading venture into the "nocturnal world" and was quite an enjoyable experience. I suspect it had to due with the author herself because I've read her sheikhs and royal series. At first I had to concentrate

Javed was an experiment, a little bit of everything, a hybrid that made him over a thousand years old. He had killed a multitude of vampires and demons and now he finds himself in a horrible situation, he's met a human woman who has been driving him crazy. He knows he cannot act on his emotions because it would mean Desiree's demise. When he goes to her home to tell her goodbye and give somewhat of an explanation, he attacked violently and to his surprise it's by Desiree.

Desiree is an Eradicator and unleashes her power straight at Javed. When things finally cool down and explanations are given, they can finally act on the passion they've been holding back and oh what passion they possess. Reading their love story I could see them fighting the universe together and that they did when they were hunted down by ninety-four predators. When Javed realizes he might loose his love, he bites and sucks the life out of her making her, he hopes, immortal.

In the end, whatever the future held for both of them, this couple would fight it together like any other love story. I loved how Javed who had been fighting for over 1,000 years found love.

Behind the Book:

"It felt like coming home when I wrote the dark and intense love story of Javed and Desiree. The backdrop of the complex urban fantasy setting provided the perfect catalyst to ignite the sensuality -and the high stakes--surrounding them. And I can't wait to write more about their universe and in the paranormal genre that knows no limits." Olivia Gates

From the moment they met, Javed and Desirée have shared an explosive passion. Yet Javed fears that being with Desi will put her in danger from the monsters that inhabit his world...monsters like himself. An immortal half-vampire, half-demon with both species' powers and none of their weaknesses, even Javed may not be strong enough to save Desi from his enemies. He is determined to end their affair to protect Desi...and to tell her the truth about himself.

But Javed isn't the only one with a deadly secret. For Desi is an Eradicator, a breed of human with special powers trained from childhood to eliminate all demons. Once their true identities are revealed, will these destined enemies destroy one another--or will their love be enough to overcome an otherworldly feud centuries in the making?

I enjoyed this anthology of different stories. Each one was different but a little on the darker side. It was still a good read especially if your not wanting to get into a full length story for whatever reason!! I have had vertigo for 4 mos. and the little nocturnes have been great for me to read in short stints!! I love them!!
