Product Description

The World River carries many secrets. And it is a place where the truth can kill.

Come to the world of the River. A world distant in time and space, where the pace of life is counted by the tides of the great River – and where swift, dark currents flow beneath a placid surface.

Pamra Don is a young woman scarred by her mother’s death and lured to a priesthood where truth must be hidden from the faithful. Thrasne is a young boatman who trades from town to town, free from the iron control of the Towers of the Awakeners. These two, both by accident and design, are about to discover many truths.

Truths about the Thraish, a native race whose savage god has promised Pamra’s people a world of willing prey.

Pamra becomes the visionary leader of a great pilgrimage to the Protector of Mna. But the Thraish at last take note of Pamra Don and her crusade… and their vengeance will be swift.

4.0 out of 5 stars I like it, actually., 24 Aug 2010
This review is from: The Awakeners (Paperback)
Well, it has an interesting and very imaginative background world, which is always a good starting point for a fantasy novel. The characters, while interesting, did not often endear themselves to me. The storyline itself was sluggish in pace, but I found it well written. If you enjoy fantasy, and can live without much character development and don't mind the slow pace, I would recommend it; despite it's flaws, I found it enjoyable and thought provoking to read.

Ultimately; Worth reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, 5 Dec 2009

This review is from: The Awakeners (Paperback)
I thought the worldbuilding and overal plot of this book was interesting, and it was that which kept me wanting to read to the end. There were quite a cast of characters to keep track of, many with strange and difficult to remember names. I struggled a bit with that-keeping track of who's who.

It was an interesting read, and the storyline (with its religious themes) definitely appealed to me. Unfortunately, what really let the book down for me was the characters. Not one of them did I really come to care for, or really sympathize with. They were interesting because they were a means through which the story could be told, but as individuals, I thought they were all pretty forgettable and lacking personality.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what you think..., 3 Jan 2001

Tepper takes a temporary turn away from feminism with The Awakeners (yay), but the ecological slant is still there. The Awakeners has a very large cast of characters, and although she does her usual brilliant job of making them all individuals, occasionally I really just wished there were only two or three main characters to follow.

The book starts out slowly, but is solid throughout. I didn't care for Pamra Don, but I suppose that's part of the point of the book - and to explain more would be to give away the plot, so I won't.

I recommend The Awakeners for being a good read, with very good points to make while still being enjoyable. Overall, though, I still prefer her later works such as Six Moon Dance and The Family Tree.
