This pocket-sized full-colour guide is designed for short-break holidays in Provence. Avignon is just 2-1/2 hours from Paris by TGV (6 hours direct from London in summer); it is served by daily coaches from London as well. For those who want to fly, low-cost airlines serve both Avignon and Nimes. Once at Avignon, travel to the other cities, towns and sights in the book is quick and easy, with frequent, fast local train and bus services - so there is no need to hire a car. Although all the walks described are easy, even 'non-walkers' will want to stroll around the cities, so will find the city plans, descriptions of the sights, and restaurant recommendations useful. A friend told us about the Walk & Eat travel books but when we looked on our Amazon website, it was not to be found. The publishers suggested Amazon.co.uk and we were delighted they had it in stock. The book is full of wonderful tips of Avignon and surrounding areas including maps and walks. It will be in our suitcase when we visit Provence in September.

Doesn't really do what it says on the tin,

I have used Sunflower guides very happily before (including Corfu, Mallorca and the Madeira version subtitled 'car tours and walks' also written by John and Pat Underwood) but this book really does not deliver. Of the 144 pages, only 10 are devoted to a single walk in Avignon and only one restaurant is mentioned. How can it justify the title of Avignon (Walk and Eat)? If I picked up any other guidebook and it listed just one restaurant, however obscure the destination, I would suspect a fix; Avignon is full of restaurants and they can't all be bad. The fact that the Underwoods visited 'on a unseasonably cold day in January' also makes it sound more like a holiday blog than a well-researched travel guide. This was compounded by six pages devoted to John Underwood's food intolerances and how to eat gluten- and dairy-free.
I have no problem with the personal style of the writing per se - it does feel as if places are being recommended by friends - but I think a guide book costing £8 should take a slightly more rigourous approach and offer some alternative restaurants to justify the title. I didn't return the book as the other walks and photographs (Nimes, Arles, Pont du Gard etc) give a flavour for the area and there are few other books which specifically cover this part of France.
