I bought this item predominantly for the USB interface, rather than the included ProTools software. I can only say that I'm over the moon with both.

I needed the interface as the 3.5mm input on my laptop was not of a sufficient quality to record anything. The 24-bit output from this output is clear and easy to control; many people have complained that the lack of volume levels on the device itself can be a problem, but these are present in the ProTools sofware, and the box does have a clip LED by both inputs so you can turn down the gain to retain quality of sound. The box itself looks and feels great - the device is robust and all the vol/gain knobs rotate smoothly and securely.

If you are a hobbyist, you may not own a pair of headphones with a 6.5mm jack. To use the Direct audio monitor (which you can't really do without), you will need either 6.5mm jack headphones (from �15 ish) or a 6.5mm to 3.5 mm converter (from 60p).

The included software 'Protools SE 8' is easy to use and is great for MIDI conversion, loops and whatnot. Of course, the limitation of up to two recording tracks and 18 tracks altogether in ProTools is slightly restrictive, but this is most likely to be sufficient for a hobbyist, although the restrictions on MIDI channels can be a slight problem for heavily scored music. There is, however, plenty of cheap software which is excellent for working with such files, such as PistonSoft's Direct MIDI to MP3 converter. If the track restrictions do bother you, you can still use software such as Audacity and Mixcraft to record with the same outstanding quality.... Read more ›

This item was much more expensive in the Apple store so I am glad I found it on Amazon. I ordered it to use with GarageBand and now Logic, and so far I am happy with it (I have not tried the software that came with it at all). I do find the guitar a wee bit crackly through it but adjusting the gain level largely addressed this problem. One thing to note is that when using it with a Mac, you need to ensure that your Mac automatically assigns it in your systems settings as the current In/Out device for audio, and you also need to manually select the channel you wish to use it with in your software before it'll actually start working. Instructions for these are a Google search away, useful as they're not included in the manual that came with the device!

EASY TO USE.
WARNING:
Look at the specification of your laptop or pc before buying as older models may not be fast enough to run the free recording program.
My laptop was a few years old so did not meet the criterion on the speed.

Please pass me a tissue...or a new laptop wil do nicely!

As a sound generator for virtual instruments its excellent and when used on laptops though a PA Live it's EXCELLENT!

JUST REMEMBER TO REMOVE THE PC POWER SUPPLY TO PREVENT HUMMING on the PA.)

I've recorded my own music for many years (I'm now in my 60s) and have used many methods over those years. 2 1/2 years ago I moved over from a PC to a Mac and all my music (which I had saved in my software's native format) was gone* - So I started again using GarageBand and Logic Express.

I wanted a proper connection between my guitar and my Mac so, on searching Amazon, I came across the Fast Track 2 USB Audio Interface with dual input and mic preamp + Pro Tools Software - Record Guitar and Vocals on Your Computer advert which combines M-Audio's "Fast Track" audio/instrument interface (in other words you plug a guitar/mic in the front and, via a USB cable, hear it through your PC/Mac) and Avid's "Pro Tools SE" music recording software.

For a change, the reviewers were not solely PC users so I could read other's evaluations and know that they referred to my own system at home. As the reviews were generally positive, I asked if Father Christmas would bring me one as I'd been a "good boy" (lol).

He did (care of my sister-in-law), and can say that the unit is definitely worth 5 stars and the software 3 (overall 4 stars).

The unit works (with very little effort, I may add) equally well with it's native software, GarageBand and Logic Express. I have found little or no distortion (just don't set the recording levels too high) and there is definitely no delay between playing the note and hearing it, so it's easy to keep time with your backing tracks. I purchased this audio interface for my very simple home recording set up. Originally I was using an adapter changing a 1/4 inch jack from my microphone cable to 3.5mm. This caused a lot of interference and overall poor quality.

When I started to use this audio interface I was very very pleased! It does the job it says on the tin, and very well indeed! The quality is faultless, and it allows for direct monitoring, which due to latency I couldn't previously do through my PC.

If you're after descent quality for some home recordings, this certainly does the job!
