Review

‘This funny and explicit tale is pure filth…’ Maxim

‘Morally irredeemable yet completely unputdownable’ Arena

‘This is a bit SCARY! It’s like someone’s writing a diary of your every waking moment’ Daily Sport

‘It’s a controversial bestseller that’s sparked a youtube frenzy’ Knave

‘WARNING: do not let your girlfriend read this…actually let her read it. The duchess might learn a thing or two’ Zoo

'I can't figure out if this book is a heartfelt dispatch from the front line in the battle of the sexes or a brilliant send-up of the way the male point of view has been misrepresented by militant feminists. I suspect both' Toby Young

'It's so primal, so dangerous, it might be the most ingenious book i've ever read' Josh Kilmer-Purcell

'The most brilliant author of the twenty-first century. But enough about me, buy Chad's book. It's a blueprint of how the mind – and penis-of the typical American male works' Maddox

Only just started reading this. Its strangely addictive. But, rather than finding it insulting to women, I think this a pretty small minded and bland depiction of a male, and certainly not "average".

This is not a normal emotionally and socially healthy male. I have not read so far even the tiniest hint of real human emotion or complex thought process. And although Chad may have you believe otherwise, there is far more to the majority of males than this character.

Its not realistic and smacks of self righteousness.

Either, Chad is lying to himself, or, he is a high functioning psychopath. Lets see what happens!

From the very first line to the very last, this book made me feel unclean...it also made me laugh out-loud many times, cringe with disgust, blush with shame and left me with the lingering question, is this how some men really think or is this book some brilliant satire of the way some women think men think...I don't know and maybe that's for the best. I do know you should read this book.
The main male character in this may seem reprehensible to many. He judges every woman he sees by appearance, imagines how they might serve him in a sexual way, what their faults are and how they might get ugly in the future. He's horrible, nasty, rude and cruel but brutally honest and direct in his way of viewing the world. He is the anti-venom to the cobra-bite of rom-coms and cutesy, overly sentimental dross that attacks best-sellers lists and the top ten at the box-office. It's too easy to say this book is misogynistic with it's portrayal of the female characters and discount it as such, but I didn't find that. Just as some might say this is way some men think and feel all superior, then you must say that this is the way some women act and realize it goes both ways.
Chad Kultgen fills each page with bitter wit, scathing humour and brutal observation which makes for a highly entertaining, funny and enjoyably uncomfortable original read. Thank you.

The Average American Male is summed up best the author's own words:
"Mom, thanks for always encouraging me to write and be creative. I'm sorry the end result of that encouragement is something you will not want to read".

Superb from start to finish. Laughed out loud many times, Kultgen writes a fantastic rant, especially his diatribe about Opera Winfrey and the 'O' Magazine.
As you should have gleaned from other reviews, this is not one for the easily offended, the big red "Sexually Explicit Content" sticker on the front of the book when it arrived is a further reminder of this. If buying as a gift for any non-male friends I'd seriously consider reading it first!

If you are literate and male then this book will not fail to please.

I was in an airport bookshop and with a baby at home couldn't get into long or worthy books and asked for a short but fun and easy to read novel. The assistant couldn't have given me a better book, this was easy to read, fun, entertaining - at times to the extent of laughing in public. The author uses the way an average man thinks to great effect in this book and sometimes you are cheering the protagonist, sometimes cringing. It all leads up to the least predictable, but perhaps most realistic ending.

I loved the book, it was refreshing and light hearted.

I was recommended this by a friend who has a peculiar taste in books, so I was quite hesitant to give it a go. But what I found was that this book is in fact a peculiar read, it's different to anything else I've read, it's extremely rude, it's extremely stereotypical of what a lot of women view men as, but it works! I wasn't offended one bit, it was incredibly ironic and somewhat heartwarming in a way. I like to view it as a much more graphic version of American Beauty. I'd highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys dark humour, and misogyny!

One of the most genuinely funny book I have read recently ! Now the question on everyone's mind is : is it true ? has he exagerated ? If you are male, you know a bit more the answer to that. As a female I have no clue, but guess it might be close to the real picture. In any case it makes for a superb and very amusing read. I could not help but feel sorry for him when trapped by a clingy girlfriend into near marriage...When people says: 'it's not for the faint-hearted', it simply means that you get a honest and vivid picture of an 'average male' mind. Yes his undisguised quasi-permanent hunger for sex can come across as gross or basic, but, well that's life ! that's men ! Or some of them. It could be of course wishful-thinking, this sexual mega-apetite, but if real, good for him. His later girlfriend seems to be very similar after all. I thought it was in some way the answer to 'Bridget Jones' for men and it certainly would be an hilarious film to watch !

I thought I would purchase this book despite the fact that the bad reviews outweighed the good. To be totally honest the book is pretty crap and I wouldn't recommend it, reading it was a complete waste of two days which unfortunately I can never have back. It has some pretty funny chapters so I kept reading but I would say it definitely was not worth the buy.
