This review is from: Avengers: Supreme Justice TPB (Paperback)
There are really three stories being told here with the Squadron Supreme, the Kree's Supreme Intelligence and Lunatic Legion and the downward spiral of the Avenger Warbird.
The storyline with the SS plays out well with the inevitable superhero clash, the uncovering of the reasons behind it and finally the two teams actually teaming up for once instead of continually butting heads. The SS are of course a rip-off of DCs JLA (though DC had a rip-off of the Avengers it was just less successful) but here they get the chance to show why they're really the top heroes of their own reality as well as getting in some character development so you actually start to care for them and hope that they make it home in the end.
The Live Kree or Die crossover is an excellent story that contains issues of Iron Man, Captain America and Quicksilver before concluding in Avengers. The main story carries well across these issues while also allowing those titles' own plots time for development, the villians have got good feasible plans rather than the usual old "lets take over the world" sort of stuff!
Throughout we see Warbird having problems failing coming to terms with her diminished powers and the others things that have happened to her as a result of being a hero, instead she hits the bottle and ends up in front of a rare Avengers court-marshal!
Finally all other characters get chances to shine from Hawkeye's difficulty in following Cap's orders after being a leader himself, to Cap's well handled diffusing of the situation, Iron Man's desire to help a fellow alcholic, the Scarlet Witch not wanting to fail her friend again and seeking support from Wonderman, Justice and Firestar struggling to fit in to the new line-up and even minor characters like the Swordsman and Magdalene getting their own moments as they realise the need to get on with their lives.
All in all a highly recommended read from the ever reliable Kurt Busiek!

We all have our heroes...., 11 Jan 2004

This was my first venture into graphic novels, having last read a superhero comic back in the 1970s as a youngster. My favourite memories are of the Avengers, so I thought I'd give Supreme Justice a try, as it featured artwork by George Perez and other notable pencilers. I certainly wasn't disappointed. The consistently good artwork complicated the compelling storyline well. On finishing the book I was left wanting more, and my collection is now steadily growing. Captain America and his team are once again my heroes, albeit nearly 30 years later!

Kurt Busiek and George Perez both manage to deliver a rich story. Superheroes never looked this good! I enjoyed this book, especially with the way Kurt Busiek has the characters interact.
