Book Description

The world of Arkaria is a dangerous place, filled with dragons, titans, goblins and other dangers. Those who live in this world are faced with two choices: live an ordinary life, or become an adventurer and seek the extraordinary.

When a series of attacks on convoys draws suspicion that Sanctuary is involved, Cyrus Davidon must put aside his personal struggles and try to find the raiders. As the attacks worsen, Cyrus and his comrades find themselves abandoned by their allies, surrounded by enemies, facing the end of Sanctuary and a war that will consume their world.

This the sequel to Defender (The Sanctuary Series) and continues the story of the Sanctuary Guild. I have to say I liked this one even more than the first. The author has worked on the dialogues and now the characters connect and interact in a more realistic way. So much so that it is a joy to read some of the quips they exchange and some of them even made me laugh out loud. i am still rooting for my favourite character Vara, who is finally realising that she has taken a shine to the main character Cyrus. The members of the sanctuary find themselves in quite a spot of bother, when they are accused of attacking and thieving from other countries/lords of power. suddenly they are persona non grata and either have to come up with millions to pay back what they never stole or bring the culprits to justice. The story is filled with elements that a lover of fantasy will adore, even venturing into the darker realms of Gods and necromancy. I enjoyed the fact that we got to take a closer look at the characters, their secrets and past lives, which gives more insight into why the have chosen the life they lead. I enjoyed the read and highly recommend it. I received a complimentary copy of this book for my review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure and emotional uncertainty 21 Mar. 2015

I sometimes wonder how many people REALLY read and put stock in prologues - and epilogues, for that matter. I, for one, am finding myself intrigued by these opening and closing chapters of the Sanctuary series and have started to read them back to back, hoping to solve the mystery before it is given to me in the last book of the series.

By the second to last chapter of Defender - first in the Sanctuary series - I was certain I would detest Vara forever. Her arrogance and, at times, childishly demeaning comments are at such odds with the rest of the 'good guys' that I wonder why she is tolerated where she clearly feels more superior. Not that it would stop my reading of the series, but she's really irritated me, always finding the most negative things to say to Cy - one of my favourite flawed heroes of all time. And of course, he seems to be carrying a torch for the 'Ice Princess' who cannot reveal the mysterious title 'Shelas'akur'. Now, at the end of Avenger, I have to admit that I am slowly warming to Vara.

Avenger shows an author who has grown in experience and confidence, his characters are more rounded and the dialogue more flowing. He has created convincing characters - the good guys goodish; the bad guys, well some über-evil at times - and injected a healthy dose of humour into this book. I had, at times, roared with laughter or grunted in indignation and, in a moment of pure frustration, even shouted at Vara. The characters are, mostly, likeable and the newer applicants and members, notably Aisling and Fortin, bring some moments of humour to an otherwise difficult time for those at Sanctuary whose very honour and lives are on the line.

5.0 out of 5 stars gets better 24 Feb. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I left a review for the first book saying it was fantastic apart from a "world of Warcraft" game feel to it. After finishing the 1st book it sort of blended in with the story so you didn't notice it as much. So is the 2nd book as good, simple answer yes. Yes and even getting better, the story was more involved and the main characters, already excellent, got so that you just need to know more (especially Cyrus and Vara). I say "main characters" as there are quite a few, but anyone who has read the Malazan books for example, wont have a problem keeping up. Here's to the 3rd!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rollicking good read. 28 Nov. 2014

These stories get better and better. I read the first and enjoyed it but the second was even more enjoyable. I am thoroughly into the fanstasy genre at the moment and this series of books is one of the best. His characters, especially Cyrus who is the lead character, gain in stature and breath with each novel. There is lots of majic but also a lot of character building so you get to know more about them with each book. If you are a lover of fantasy, especially one with lots of battles, you will love these books. Also it would seem the autjor improves with each book. You should also try his 'Girl in a Box series.

This is turning into an entertaining series. All the familiar fantasy characters are here; from elfs, dwarfs, trolls etc.Resulting in a gung-ho sci-fi adventure. There are plenty twists and turns with deceits and double dealings abound, and of course the never ending love story simmering under the surface.Looking forward to the next book.
