I've created thousands of pdfs over the years, mainly from Word documents, and have tried lots of pdf creation software packages.

I used Ghostview/script for several years - fine but a bit clumsy. Then I tried Open Office but it always altered the layout of complex Word docs. For big documents I'd email the Word docs to my son who'd run them through the full Adobe creator. Nice results but the software's so expensive. I could get Office 2007 to create pdfs but I'm very happy with Office 2003 and know loads of its keyboard shortcuts.

Nowadays I create a lot of pdf guides to put on my website so I need something that is easy to use and creates decent quality, compact pdfs.

I found eXPertPDF v4 on a cover CD a couple of years back. I used that and v5 extensively, with excellent results. Then I paid for the upgrade to v6.

The only thing I don't really like is the way links to websites within a pdf result in the pdf being replaced by the target site when called from a website rather than opening in a new tab. But I'm assured that's how it's meant to work. So I try to limit the number of links in pdfs destined for the web.

What I like most about eXPertPDF is the control over the size vs quality of the output pdf, especially the fine control over image compression. You can even save combinations of settings for use later, eg one to produce compact, web-friendly pdfs and another for bigger, print quality outputs.

I tested a 350kb Word doc with a few images and the pdf was 121kb from eXPertPDF, 141kb from Nova PDF Lite v5 and a portly 225kb from Nuance PDF Coverter 5. The eXPertPDF and Nova outputs were just the right quality for posting to a website whereas the Nuance pdf was not very good quality with the images despite its bulk.

    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Expert PDF provides three components: a PDF printer for generating PDFs from, say, a Word document; a PDF editor for adding bookmarks, text formatting and minor amendments to the text; and a PDF-to-Word converter.

The PDF printer seems to function no better than free alternatives, such as CutePDF Writer, and in some cases gives worse results; e.g. a double-bordered text box in Word was converted with only a single border by Expert PDF, whereas CutePDF correctly preserves the double border. The "convert to PDF" button that is added to a Word toolbar does not allow you to select only a subset of the pages to convert, which I found irritating. The first time I used it, Word crashed with Expert PDF stuck displaing the message "analyzing document". Unimpressed.

The PDF editor seems, to this reviewer, to be the only potentially useful component. But even then, it provides only marginally more functions than the free PDF-XChange viewer from Tracker Software Products, which also offers text formatting such as highlighting, strike-through, comments, etc. Expoert PDF is useful if you have a need to edit bookmarks and make insertions to the text (although I couldn't get the cut and paste functions to work at all).

The editor also has a rather cluttered layout, with a lot of screen space wasted with the manufacturer's logo; the toolbars can be rearranged but can't be docked vertically, which I would like to do in order to maximise the vertical space available for the PDF itself.

The PDF-to-Word converter seems to be quite hopeless. Given a PDF file with embedded text (so no text recognition required), it completely messed up the formatting of the document, especially the tables. It seems unable to cope with varying-sized pages within a single PDF file. Given a PDF file where the text is an image, it made no attempt to perform text recognition; rather, it inserted such low-resolution images within the Word file that the text became quite unreadable.

So overall, rather a disappointment. I would advise trying free alternatives such as CutePDF and PDF-XChange first and only considering this product if you really need the extra functionality.

Did not work 7 Sep 2009

It may be ok for ripping simple PDF documents but was unable to cope with anything but the simplest formatting. Pages with tables lost their formatting. If you want to convert Office documents to PDF files, then try Cute Pdf, which is a free and reliable download.
