Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

virtualized Browser security

Bank, shop, and Browse the weB safely and privately.
ZoneAlarm ForceField provides essential browser security that protects users and their PCs from the latest browser attacks. Delivering protection not found in traditional security suites, ZoneAlarm ForceField complements whatever security you already have. It creates a shield around your browser that blocks drive by downloads, browser exploits, phishing attempts, spyware and keyloggers. User's passwords, confidential information and financial data remain protected. Now users can surf the Internet, without compromising their computer, information, or identity.

Why it matters.
Browser attacks are real. New web technologies make hacking into computers easier, and for the victim more dangerous. Hackers are using web technologies and browser vulnerabilities to bypass traditional security to infiltrate, control, and command user PCs through their browser. Just by visiting a single website, a user can fall victim to a drive-by download that silently delivers over 1000 attacks. One out of 10 websites is booby-trapped, often installing viruses and spyware that capture key financial data and passwords. Phishing attacks are growing increasingly sophisticated and trick even careful surfers into revealing confidential information. These attacks take over your PC, damage your credit rating and steal your money.

How it works.
ZoneAlarm ForceField protects users from browser-based exploits and other web threats by stopping attacks before they can reach the operating system. Each time a user surfs the web with ZoneAlarm ForceField, it automatically creates a clone of the user's browser. Every time a user hits a website or opens a new page, any malware that potentially could attack goes straight to the ZoneAlarm ForceField clone. That way if any threats do penetrate a user's defenses, they affect only the temporary clone - not you or your PC.

By creating a virtual user and providing additional defenses, ZoneAlarm ForceField secures users' real identity, protects their computer, maintains their confidential information, and lets users surf privately leaving no trace of their activity in their browser or on any computer. Continuously updated to block the latest wave of web-based attacks, ZoneAlarm ForceField works in the background to block spyware, prevent malicious downloads, and jam keyword and screengrabber attacks. It's a technique we call "Virtual Browsing." We believe it is an absolutely essential piece of Internet security software, and only ZoneAlarm has it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not compatible with 64 bit Vista, no anonymous surfing, 28 Aug 2008
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
Considering that Zonealarm are not even willing to try to convert any of their current software to a 64 bit operating system, you'd think that they would be upfront about it. No warning about this basic requirement on the box, on their website or on this Amazon page. Any prior knowledge of this problem requires a good search around some tucked-away forums.

Apart from concerns about how competently Zonealarm's code is written you ought to be aware that their software may not play nicely with other things already on your computer - Kaspersky antivirus for instance.

With so many other security programs - firewall, antivirus, antispyware (and Vista itself!) - offering browser security and anti-phishing the only real selling point of this product seems to be privacy, however Forcefield does not offer identity theft protection - it claims a 'private browser' although it does not appear to hide your IP address.

All FF seems to offer which is not already covered elsewhere is to stop any other other users on your PC from finding out where you've been - which I'm sure you know is easily accomplished on your Menu Bar with:

    'Tools, Delete Browsing History'.

(XP users look under Internet Options)

And if this wasn't enough Microsoft have recently added InPrivate to the soon-available Internet Explorer 8, which is another way of hiding your browsing habits for free.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad product but don't mistake it for something it's not., 30 Aug 2008

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
Zonealarm - a not too unfamiliar name when talking about internet security. Most people will be familiar with their firewall which has long proved popular as a free alternative to other paid for products.

So what has ForceField got to offer the consumer as a paid for product?
Well firstly, don't be under the illusion that this is a complete security suite for your computer. There is no antivirus or firewall software within this package. For your money you're getting an add-on to your Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox web browser. The ForceField suite is designed to compliment your existing security suite and add extra protection and peace of mind whilst browsing.

Main features of the product include:

Virtual browsing - a feature which creates a 'fake' area on your PC so should any malicious software enter your pc only the 'fake' area is affected, which is then deleted on exiting the browser.

Anti-phising protection - to prevent you from entering sensitive information into non-legimate sites.

    Protection against spyware.

The option to open a private session in another web browser window. This feature allows a surfer to browse completely anonymously on their PC. No trace of your browsing will be saved on the computer. This is all well and good within an internet cafe environment where you wouldn't want personal details saved, but maybe not something you'd want your kids to take advantage of. For the standard home user I can't imagine when this feature would ever be needed - I have certainly never used it.

Probably the most useful feature of this product is the download scanner. On downloading any file the standard browser download box is replaced by ForceField's own. This will detect if the software you are downloading is safe.

Do be aware though when considering this product, the likes of Norton and Mcafee have a majority of this software included in their full security suites so there isn't really any need for this if you already own such products. And whilst I think the download scanner is a decent feature, again any up to date antivirus software will detect anything dodgy anyway. For just over £10 it does provide extra peace of mind for a newcomer to the internet, however decent security software and a bit of common sense on the net could save you the £10.

4.0 out of 5 stars Complementary Protection, 27 Aug 2008
By Richard Kelly (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
    (TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
ZoneAlarm ForceField is a product that is aimed at the missing link in most Windows computer security products. It has a very simple aim, protect computers from Browser Hijack/spyware attacks. It privides protection from the following types of attacks

Phishing Web Sites - web sites that look legitimate but are looking for you to type in your private/credit card details.

Key log/screen grab attacks - although this may not work if you have a security suite that provides encryption of keystrokes anyway.

Spyware Flushing - stops spyware being downloaded and installed, but will not remove any that you already have!

Spy Site Blocking - flags sites that download spyware for you so you don't get it downloaded in the first place.

Dangerous download detector - checks downloads for potential nasty spyware, but not for viruses

Web site safety check - uses a traffic light system to show the relative safety of a web site.

The killer feature for most people will be the Virtual Browser. When this function is invoked all the usual Web Site history and cookie items are stored in a virtual area of the registry and file system. When you close the browser all the items are deleted so there is no trail for your friends/siblings/parents/spouse etc to follow.

The product is small and once I attempted to install from the DVD it told me that there was more upto date version on the Internet - that was a 5.5 MB download and it took a couple of minutes to install. Once installed there is basically no configuration. You get a toolbar at the top of your browser from where you can change the settings, which I haven't, as the default behaviour is that everything is on. I did notice that my browser takes longer to start up now and some sites take longer to load, but the delay isn't much of an issue.

All these sound quite good, BUT you must still use good practice on your machine as this is not an AntiVirus product it is simply a Browser Hijack Security product. To keep yourself safe on the web you there are a few simple rules that should be followed - this product is an attempt to povide these rules to systems where people are either not technically literate enough to follow them, or who wish to not follow them. And remember to remove any spyware that is already installed on your machine!
