Baum's original tale of the Wizard of Oz is adapted to create the story of Oz. The story is made up of 18 beautifully illustrated pages of a book, each being depicted on the screen with the words, and the animated characters coming to life as the story, is told.
With the aid of this storybook options can be set to either have the tale read to the child, or for the child to read themselves with the text being highlighted along the way. As the story is completed on each page the characters come to life and act out a short scene before a new page is opened.
The storybook has the facility to be fully customised to your child's ability. Early readers can have just a few words to each page, and this can be increased as their reading capacity grows. This CD-ROM celebrates 100 years of L. Frank Baum's classic book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which was first launched in May 1900, and features the much-loved characters Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion.
The magical worlds and characters of Oz are seen as never before on this CD-ROM, through the magic of 3-D modeling and animation. Children will be invited to travel with the characters in the search for Dorothy, who has been captured by the Wicked Witch. As they travel through Oz, children will encounter problems to be solved and games to be played.
These nine educational games, four puzzles, and eight interactive challenges have all been extensively tested for usability with children of the target age group, and approved by educational consultants. Children can learn about color, shape, musical notes, and simple patterns; improve concentration, listening, and ICT coordination; develop number and problem-solving skills; and practice estimating and comparing. I was expecting this software to be similar to The Three Little Pigs, which contained activities and games as well as a story. Initially my six year old enjoyed looking at the pictures and listening to the story but ultimately it was a bit of a disappointment as there weren't any games. It would probably be more suitable for a 4 or 5 year old. I wish I'd bought the activities and games version now.
All three of my kids liked this game. Simple and can play over and over again. Unfortunately, probably very dated as I bought this back in 2003 for my first child, and remembering how good it was bought it again for my youngest. It works with xp, wouldn't know if can cope on later versions. Suits even the youngest on the computer, if you sit and do it with the once so they get the hang of it my 3 year old was doing on his own in under 10 minutes. Has levels so my middle daughter goes on it and is still challenging. Nice memory games, has a weights game too and a cute penguin!
This is a very simple story telling cd rom. It gives three levels to choose from and tells the story with more complex words each time. There are animations to trigger but no more player involvement than that. THIS IS NOT A GAME CD. Its still nice and in tandem with its sister game cd, it makes a nice addition, but its playability as a stand alone is limited.
My children looked at it once or twice but didn't come back to it.
