    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is an extremely clever bit of software, which claims to be 100% legal. In a nutshell, it scans 1000's of Internet radio stations and rips songs on the fly and saves them in mp3 format to your hard drive.

You can search by artist or track title or indeed both, or select a genre and Radiotracker does the rest. Initially I did a search for The Beatles and within 30 minutes I had nine Beatles songs downloaded to my PC. Next I searched for Prince and within 10 minutes, I had mp3's of When Doves Cry and Let's Go Crazy.

Installation is straightforward (albeit unusually via Internet Explorer) and the software is user friendly and it comes with a built-in media player. You can set up the software to search and download for anywhere between 10 minutes and 24 hours. There are some downsides - the mp3's are usually of very average quality (128kbps) and you sometimes get DJ's talking over the beginning and end of songs (although all songs are faded in and out to try and alleviate this problem). However, despite the downsides, Radiotracker has the ability to download 100s (and that's no exaggeration) of songs daily that you can burn to CD or just listen to via your PC for the cost of a couple of CD albums. And it's good fun too - search by 'Artist' and you never know what songs you're going to get.

I would suggest that Radiotracker has arrived at the digital music party a little too late. Spotify has millions of songs available for streaming and Amazon (and others) offer high quality mp3s without the DRM headache at a fairly reasonable price. But, I'd suggest that Radiotracker is an impressive and very affordable alternative.

    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is a great little programme. As the product description says it basically scans internet radio stations and downloads tracks onto your hard drive. No fuss, no charge, and yet apparently it's all above board and there are no copyright/royalty issues (and who am I to argue?)

The software downloads easily enough and you are then presented with an interface (see product photos) which prompts you to choose the musical genre (or podcast) you're interested in (NB not all tastes are catered for but it is quite broad and you can also add your own). You are then asked to choose the number of stations you wish to monitor from a list of 15000 (though again you can add your own). I chose between ten and twenty and pressed 'activate' and then just watched as Radiotracker simultaneously recorded the tracks that the chosen stations happened to be playing and added them to a folder on my hard drive. The system is highly flexible and artists, tracks and stations can be black-listed so you don't download unwanted material and what's more it also locates album artwork, tracklisting AND lyrics where available. Anyway once you have the music you desire you are then able (from the same interface)to burn your selections onto CD, convert them to MP3s or turn them into ringtones. I found this software as easy to use as stand-alone 'dedicated' CD-burning software too. I was particularly delighted with the ease of use of the ring-tone generator software: again I have some stand alone software for this but Radiotracker's version is better and less fiddly to use (yet fully featured for what you need). Lastly this version of Radiotracker now features the facility to record social web radio websites such as Last.fm which is brilliant if you need to track down that obscure 'Tudor Lodge' track (that would never, EVER get played on radio - even with 15000 stations to choose from!). The only downside is that you are typically getting a compression/quality rate of 160 Kbps but this is generally satisfactory for most people anyway. If only it would work with Spotify!

I am happy to award this product five stars. Easy to use and gives great results. Still can't believe there's no catch!

By Mr. P. HAIGH TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Radio Tracker is a piece of software that allows you to record MP3 straight from streaming radio stations onto your hard drive. The concept is that you can specify a music genre, artist, or even track titles, and it will 'listen out' for a match and then record it. I've used Radio Tracker on and off since I received it and have had mixed results.

First the good stuff: It does what it says it will - I gave it a mixture of artists and it promptly went away and started recording streamed music by those artists. It will happily record multiple copies of the same track but tags them with a quality rating, so that you can decide which are worth keeping. You can exclude low bit rate stations. You can exclude songs, or tell it to stop recording copies of something once you've got one you want to keep. All in all very good, easy to use, and the user interface is good at showing you what is happening, what has been recorded, etc.

Now the bad stuff: The quality of the tracks you get is highly variable - and I'm not talking about bit rates and distortion. Radio Tracker depends on the radio stations correctly 'announcing' the start and end of each track and frequently I found my tracks polluted with the start or end of another song at the end or start of my recording. Not to mention the inevitable DJ talking over the tracks as well. You end up having to listen to several copies of each track to working which is the best one to keep. Sometimes that's none of them. And don't forget that while you're running the software, it is consuming bandwidth even if it is not recording. Radio Tracker will track several stations at once so its not unusual for it to consume say 512kbps of your bandwidth. Not something to leave running indefinitely.

In conclusion I was hoping that this software would be more 'hands off' but the reality is that you'll spend a lot of time sifting through the recordings to build a music collection. And you'll have to be prepared to edit out the junk at the start or end of your tracks. The music quality is not bad, but doesn't compare well to the tracks I've purchased from Amazon MP3 or iTunes, or copied from CD. This is a good product to build a party play list from if you don't want to pay for the music. But not so good if you're looking for music to keep. This is a good product, but it is let down by the quality of the radio stations.
