Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Geoff Hamilton's Plant Encyclopedia is a companion product to the famous gardener's 3D Garden Designer and lists more than 4,000 shrubs, flowers and trees, many of which were grown by Hamilton in his famous Barnsdale garden.

Each entry in the database is well-illustrated and includes advice on what kind of soil and aspect will best suit the plant, how high it's likely to grow, how much light it needs and when it flowers, along with a more general description. And because gardeners (and Hamilton in particular) are keenly aware of how plants "fit" together in a garden, you'll also find cross-referenced hotlinks to other plants in the database that have similar characteristics or complement each other in a particular way. You can do a simple quick search through the database by typing in key words or set up much more complex searches that, for example, don't just look for a plant name (which can be the common or proper Latin name) but also define the plant's height, when it flowers, whether it's a climber or has trumpet flowers--even if it was one of the plants that Hamilton himself was fond of.

Selected plants can be combined into a "pick list" that you can print out in groups to take to the garden centre for reference, or simply combine into a colourful screensaver slide show for your computer. Encyclopedias usually make for highly informative but rather dry reading--Geoff Hamilton's Plant Encyclopedia manages to inject genuine enthusiasm into every entry, making it a valuable addition to any gardener's electronic library. --Rob Beattie
