One sunny day me and my friend were shopping and thought we would go buy a board game, invite some people over and have a social night, I mentioned to him that I heard of a game named axis and allies and what it was about, my friend being a WW2 nut quickly agreed this was the game we should buy, so I ordered it and it arrived next day,I had managed to read half the rule book before people turned up,and while playing one of my friends had read where I left off, so we filled people in on what to do with our combined knowledge, the rules were very easy to understand and after playing a few rounds the book only ever came out when we weren't really sure if what we had done was legal but was usually quickly resolved.
I have never know a game where it keeps the person interested throughout, its like chess, risk and tops trumps combined, your making strategies meanwhile keeping an eye on how much money your spending and trying to communicate with friends about moves your going to take without the other team seeing, games can last a long time though so take a day out and prepare mentally, we stopped at 4 in the morning the first night we played then carried on the next day just because we had gotten into a stalemate and neither side was backing down, discussing strategies via text so to opposition didn't see was probably the saddest but most necessary thing we ever did.
its so much fun this game,i can not stress this enough, all the little pieces make you feel like a true commander, and when you hold off a allied invasion of France with Germany when your hugely outnumbered you have the right to mock the other player, using your best German officer impression " yarr ".
the only downside is that yes the board is small but who cares, the fun factor outweighs any cons for this game, buy it, you wont be unsatisfied I guarantee it, this is coming from a man whos played 4 games now and got it on sat, its now fri and were already planning our next game,......TO WAR!!!
