Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
"The Axis & Allies name has led to many spinoff games using more or less the same mechanics: In 2004, the first major revision to the core game, often termed the Revised Edition. In 2008, Axis & Allies: 50th Anniversary Edition was released celebrating the 50th anniversary of its publisher, Avalon Hill. This was followed by Axis & Allies: 1942 in 2009, the second major revision to the core game, with mechanics taken from the anniversary edition, also celebrating the 25th anniversary of Axis & Allies itself." (Wikipedia, 2009).

I bought this game as soon as it was advertised and, apart from e-mail shenanigans from Amazon, I'm thoroughly impressed by the whole thing. As with most games of this type, it draws on the players tactical ability, the statistical benefits and drawbacks of building different units and the sheer luck of dice rolling. There are several new rules, mostly concerning naval issues (like there are now cruisers) and attacking with and defending against bombers, which make the whole thing more technical but more entertaining.

I first played this new game with two mates, they played as Japan and Germany and I played as the Allied powers. The game went to and fro nicely befroe they got the upper hand after some dreadful dice rolling by me and some sheer luck by them, but final victory came after 5 hours play, so don't think you are going to have a quick blast.

The down sides are the board is rather small and certain regions can get cluttered and there aren't really enough little grey discs for comfort, but apart from them the biggest issue is the game requires you to keep score of who is earning how many IPC points with their lands, but doesn't include any IPC notes and that makes keeping track of the finance side difficult - so buy some spare Monopoly money to use!!!

But all in all, this is great and is best played with some good mates and a few cold beers (or whatever, religious and legal restrictions applying).

Sweet little game 13 Nov 2009
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
I must concur, this is a wonderful Axis & Allies title, and I have them all! It's true that it does not come with any paper money (I just pillaged some of my other A&A games for this) or a proper battle board but these things can be overcome. My biggest annoyance with the game, however, is the size of the playing map - it is rather small. Although, I've played several games with friends and we have managed to get around this issue with minimal fuss. Another thing is that this game does not feature the 'Research & Technology' rule that allows you to improve your combat units, among other advantages. I would therefore suggest that this edition is strictly for beginners, and to that end I have been using it to introduce new players to the game.(you can always add the tech rules yourself, if you like)

On the plus side, the new sculpts for the playing peices (or miniatures) are indeed the best ever seen in a A&A title. The quality of the rules are superb and leave no questions unanswered. Overall, I'd say that this is well worth the money. Please go ahead and buy it if you want to take the next step from 'Risk' into the world of strategy games - you won't be disappointed! I love this game (and all its other variants) and play it at least once a week.

Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
One sunny day me and my friend were shopping and thought we would go buy a board game, invite some people over and have a social night, I mentioned to him that I heard of a game named axis and allies and what it was about, my friend being a WW2 nut quickly agreed this was the game we should buy, so I ordered it and it arrived next day,I had managed to read half the rule book before people turned up,and while playing one of my friends had read where I left off, so we filled people in on what to do with our combined knowledge, the rules were very easy to understand and after playing a few rounds the book only ever came out when we weren't really sure if what we had done was legal but was usually quickly resolved.

I have never know a game where it keeps the person interested throughout, its like chess, risk and tops trumps combined, your making strategies meanwhile keeping an eye on how much money your spending and trying to communicate with friends about moves your going to take without the other team seeing, games can last a long time though so take a day out and prepare mentally, we stopped at 4 in the morning the first night we played then carried on the next day just because we had gotten into a stalemate and neither side was backing down, discussing strategies via text so to opposition didn't see was probably the saddest but most necessary thing we ever did.

its so much fun this game,i can not stress this enough, all the little pieces make you feel like a true commander, and when you hold off a allied invasion of France with Germany when your hugely outnumbered you have the right to mock the other player, using your best German officer impression " yarr ".

the only downside is that yes the board is small but who cares, the fun factor outweighs any cons for this game, buy it, you wont be unsatisfied I guarantee it, this is coming from a man whos played 4 games now and got it on sat, its now fri and were already planning our next game,......TO WAR!!!
