The generation we live in today has let technology control their lives instead of enhancing them; People are obsessively and sedated by Apple's i products and online video games like Call of Duty and World of Warcraft. They say that these games have made their lives better, having a virtual persona online with players around the world but are they starting to loose their grip on reality?
Welcome to Avalon, a live action film by fantastic filmmaker Mamoru Oshii(GITS,Patlabor etc)who has taken on this subject matter. the Story is about Ash; a loner who's only companion is a pet dog but when she's hooked up into the video game Avalon she is a professional and highly skilled soldier. She makes a living by trading her score points for credits and as the film progresses she goes in search of her former comrade who vanished into the forbidden areas of the game.
The first thing that has to be said is that the visuals are absolutely amazing; l even had to pause the film a few times to fully appreciate the sepia imagery. The direction is superb as always from Oshii showing us stunning action sequences, great meditaive scenes and his trademark symbolism.
And as everyone has mentioned the soundtrack by regular composer Kenji Kawai is just compelling and outstanding. It fits the movie together like chicken and rice. The polish actors themselfs have done a great job; Malgorzata Foremniak's character is quiet similar to Major Motoko Kusanagi, the movie does have similarities to Ghost in The Shell but it doesnt fail to be one of the most original and greatest Sci-Fi/Cyberpunk movies ever made (unlike The Matrix's attempt)
I highly recommend you witness this film's fantastic visuals and brilliant cultural & poetic story that will leave you asking questions about what reality and generation is their going to be next.
