You have a 10:30 meeting in Paris and a lunch date at noon. Time will be tight if the airport traffic's slow but with Microsoft Autoroute 2001 to plot your route in advance you may just make it. Enter your starting point and destinations and the program pops up a route for you, complete with point-to-point time estimates and detailed directions. Points of interest, restaurants and hotels along the way are marked on the map, with contact information and on occasion a review in a pop-up box. A few years ago, it would have looked like science fiction.

Microsoft Autoroute 2001 covers the UK and Europe, with maps for most major European cities and address-to-address routing in Britain, France and Germany. It may not cover the very minor streets (the ones your car might not fit down anyway) but the maps are reasonably clear and well delineated, and you can choose from three types--political, geographical or auto. If you use a handheld, running Windows CE 2 or later, you may want to try Pocket Streets, and there's GPS support. Getting started using this program is time-consuming, as you have to fill out each address, but once you've built your database of destinations, Autoroute's intelligently plotted routes may just save you a bundle of time. --Kathleen Keefe

AutoRoute 2001 delivers not only a complete map of Europe, but can provide driving directions regardless of whether the trip is to the next-door town or across the continent. If you are travelling in Great Britain, or in much of Germany or France, you can route address-to-address. There are also street-level maps of major towns in Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria and Italy. And there is no need to swap between a street mapping product and a trip-planning product - the maps knit together seamlessly.

Basically it is an OK product. Not nearly as intuitive to use as it's predcessors and with one or two big shortcomings:

Although sold as a '2001' product the UK map base is only acurate to mid 1999 with the omission of major road improvements that opened in September 1999. Try looking for the new section of the A30 from Honiton to Exeter!

Also sold as supporting GPS and running under Windows 2000. But sadly not both at the same time! - if you want to use GPS you are stuck with running it under Win98. I've looked for a GPS update for Win2000 but it appears MS know nothing about GPS drivers.

2001? 1999 more like.

Many major roads are missing, such as the M60 link road around Manchester completed in July 2000.

I feel that all routing products, not just MS's but all of them, should not display the "year of release" (though this was actually released in 2000), but the year (and month!) that the map is current to.

Would this decrease sales? Possibly, but at least before you buy the product, you'd have a fair idea as to wether or not something VITAL to your journey was present.

There might be a lot of details, but without the ability to direct me properly, it's pointless.

There should be a version just for GB, to reduce the price, and a version without some of the bangs and whistles (like GPS) to provide a 'lite' version.

Pathetic for such a big corporation.

This is generally a good package. It is all on one CD and occupies much less hard disk space that some other packages (e.g. Inforoute). The map detail is good considering this. However the GPS interface is poor. Position is updated once every 15 seconds which is not enough for in town driving and a bit of a surprise considering that Autoroute Express updates every second.
