Superb 10 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This book strikes a fine balance between the terrifying storyline (a childminder with a bent for violence) and the evocative almost poetic prose. The thought of what Josephine Strane can do and does to the children in her care is bearable only because William Wall writes so elegantly. I couldn't put this book down and neither could my partner. It held my attention up to the last page. I was never sure whether I should pity Josephine or hate her. It was totally credible and incredibly well-written.

I read this book because a colleague who's into Irish fiction suggested it. She was certainly right. Josephine Strane, the main character, is a frightening possibility. This author knows how to put the bad news. He dresses it up in fine language and sugars the pill, so much so that you almost don't notice what's going on until it's too late, but by then you can't put the book down. I agree with all the reviews posted on this site. It's a book about evil, but it's an ordinary evil that you could easily encounter. It's a gripping page turner. I found it hard to put down, and actually sat up until one am to finish it. I will now track down his other books. J Holmes

A light read 29 Nov 2003
By Joanne
Format:Paperback
Ok as a light read (I read it on a plane trip). It keeps you interested but there is no real suspense in it. I did enjoy it though.
