Buyer Beware! 31 May 2011
By Mike
Format:Paperback
I pre-ordered this book several months before release based on a blog recommendation so you can imaging my utter disappointment when I opened it to find it was nothing more than a beginners guide to PowerShell with basic coverage of the most common Windows 2008 PowerShell modules. More than 50% of the book (excluding the sizable appendix) is actually devoted to installing and using PowerShell whilst automation coverage actually starts at chapter 7 on page 147 and although the book contains 412 pages only 142 are actually dedicated to automating Windows (that sizable appendix starts on page 289).

It's not a bad book (which is why I gave it 2 stars) and if you're a "complete and utter beginner" it's well written. There are a whole bunch of "learning PowerShell" books which is no doubt why the publishers decided to use this name to differentiate the book but it's misleading and should really have been entitled: "Learning Windows PowerShell 2.0: An Introduction to Automating Windows Server 2008 R2 Administration".

Over the years I have found Sybex books to be hit and miss and this one, for me at least, falls into the latter category.

Do you want to learn PowerShell 2.0? 7 Jun 2011
By tlf - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a well written, easy to read and understand computer book. If you have never used PowerShell or if you need to brush up your PowerShell skills, this is the book for you. As you read through the book, PowerShell terms and concepts are presented in a manner that allows you to easily grasp the concepts presented. The book builds a foundation of PowerShell knowledge and increasingly introduces more complex topics which build upon that foundation. As you move through the book, easy to understand examples allow you to work along on your computer as you read the book. This style of presentation is what makes this book so good. If you want to learn PowerShell or just want to brush up on your skills, this is the book for you!

A great starting place for the PowerShell beginner and great read for the more advanced PowerSheller 18 May 2012

The number of PowerShell books are rising and coverage varies. I am currently going through many of the PowerShell books that are out there now and reading as well as reviewing the different approaches to explaining PowerShell. I have to give these authors big time credit because the actual process that they use to explain PowerShell is wonderful. Brains work in various ways but I think they have started from a solid point and then built on it in very sound steps. I noticed they present some ideas and examples early on that would help people wrap their heads around the different concepts that PowerShell delivers and also give them something they can practice and use in PowerShell right away. In my opinion this is a great book for the PowerShell beginner as well as a formidable reference to strengthen your grasp of PowerShell. Good job guys, I love when IT books are delivered this way.
