Is it really possible to invent a machine that does the job of a writer? What is it about a landlady's house that makes it so hard for her guests to leave? Does Sir Basil Turton value most his wife or one of his priceless sculptures? Here are thirteen of Roald Dahl's most unexpected tales, offering young readers the perfect introduction to the adult writing of a storytelling genius. From the sensitivity of stories such as 'Katina' to the surprising creepiness of 'Taste', these stories are full of all the fun, excitement and wonder of Roald Dahl's writing, offering originality, ingenuity, horror, unexpected twists and turns, a touch of the macabre - and much more besides.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping short stories 13 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
This book is a collection of some superb short stories by a master of suspense. Each one has a twist in it, and none are remotely predictable. They feature Roald Dahl's trademark implied ending, which I love. By this I mean the technique by which he doesn't tell you the twist at the end of the story explicitly, but still makes it clear. This adds to the sense of mystery and fun in the stories. As each story is so short they can be quickly read in a few minutes without taking a massive chunk of time out of your day. I return to these stories over and over again, and they are still not old or tired. This collection is a brilliant introduction to Roald Dahl for anyone who has only ever read his longer children's stories, but will equally delight the more experienced Dahl reader. Ranging diversely across completely different types of story and types of character, there is at least something for everyone. More likely, you will love it all!

4.0 out of 5 stars a mix of Dahl's short stories 25 April 2011
By Henk Beentje TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
The book: a collection of short (5 to 33 pages) stories from four earlier collections: five from Kiss Kiss (1960), one from Over To You (1946), four from Someone Like You (1954) and three from More Tales of the Unexpected (1973). The sequence seems a bit random, more for effect than for grouping according to earlier books or chronology... mostly, I think, so the very good but rather daunting real story 'Katina' from Dahl's RAF war experiences wouldn't start the collection. Anyway, here are the stories that are included:
title story (1949), Mrs Bixby and the Colonel's coat (1953), The Butler (1980), Man from the South (1948), The Landlady (1954), Parson's Pleasure (1958), The Umbrella Man (1973), Katina (1945), The way up to Heaven (1958), Royal Jelly (1959), Vengeance is mine Inc. (1973), Taste (1953), Neck (1961).

My opinion: good stories- not necessarily the selection I would have made from the books (I love the brain story, what is it called?) but really a good intro for anyone who doesn't know the short stories - a good taster. They don't re-read as well as his full-book stories, as it is the surprise ending that often carries the punch - if you remember the ending from an earlier reading, some of the magic is gone! But a nice collection for those who don't know the short stories, with some good stories and some OK ones, and the excellent but very sad 'Katina' - four stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining 6 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback
This collection of short stories is very entertaining showing both Dahl's macabre and amusing sides. The tales are mixed, some based in the UK, others in the US and all have that sense of darkness with a twist in the tail.

Read and enjoy!
