Product Description

Bloody Brilliant - JULIE BURCHILL Glitteringly epigrammatic, it's a glam-rock Naked Civil Servant in court shoes. But funnier. And tougher - MARK SIMPSON Pistol sharp, loaded with witty one-liners and peppered with Maker's scatter gun observations on life, music, and the meaning of good hair - PAUL BURSTON Autofellatio is the memoir of singer, lyricist, writer and occasional actor James Maker. It begins with his teenage years in punk-era London, moving through the counter-cultural 1980s with an account of the indie group Raymonde and his association with pop artist, Morrissey. Visiting the adventures of rock group RPLA, the filming of "Middleton's Changeling", and the party years of the 1990s, it closes with his relocation to, and observations on, life in Spain.

From the Publisher

Winner of the Polari First Book Prize 2011

Paul Burston, Chair of the judges, said: "The judges felt that Autofellatio stood out with its humour, honesty and heartfelt exploration of British queer life over the last 30 years. It deals with the hardships of growing up gay in a way that is witty, endlessly quotable and, above all, brave. The hard-won wisdom and tenacity of this story is also reflected in the way in which the book evolved."

5.0 out of 5 stars Well blow me...., 1 Sep 2010
This review is from: Autofellatio (Kindle Edition)
At long last the much anticipated "Autofellatio" becomes available to the discerning oddballs amongst us.

James Maker, long time New York Dolls devotee and periodical visitor to the madness that is called "the pop industry" presents us with the first instalment of life: his life. From start to finish it is a riveting read; weaving its way from childhood to adulthood with such verve that it becomes unputdownable. It is all here; from realising early on that normality was never an option to the formation and disintegration of the often feted band, Raymonde. Naked candour and jocularity at life's sheer absurdness shine throughout. An absolute pleasure awaits. Don't just take my word for it, find out for yourself.

Volume 2 is due out late autumn.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book for everyone and no one, 23 Nov 2011
This review is from: Autofellatio (Paperback)
"Autofellatio" is the portrait of a Warholian superstar stuck in the working-class districts of 1970s London. Not just a memoir, but a slap in the face of the mundane society with a red patent leather glove from Seditionaries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Autofellatio means you'll never leave the house...., 20 Sep 2011
This review is from: Autofellatio (Paperback)
James Maker's Autofellatio reminds me of that Chinese saying about being cursed with an interesting life. What makes the book even more enjoyable than the things he recounts - from his brushes with teenage transvestism and prostitution, to his encounter with Morrissey and the trials and tribulations of his own musical career - is the way he recounts them. There's an arch humour and a razor sharp voice in all this that will have you laughing out loud and not wanting to put the book down until you've reached the end - and then you'll want to read it all over again.
