Book Description

1 May 2006
Autobiography of a Yogi introduces the reader to the life of Paramahansa Yogananda and his encounters with spiritual figures of both the East and West. The book begins with his childhood family life, to finding his guru, to becoming a monk and establishing his teachings of Kriya Yoga meditation. The book continues in 1920 when Yogananda accepts an invitation to speak in a religious congress in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He then travels across America lecturing and establishing his teachings in Los Angeles, California. In 1935 he returns to India for a yearlong visit. When he returns to America, he continues to establish his teachings, including writing this book.

About the Author

Yogananda was born in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India to a devout family. According to his younger brother, Sananda, from his earliest years young Mukunda's awareness and experience of the spiritual was far beyond the ordinary. In his youth he sought out many of India's Hindu sages and saints, hoping to find an illuminated teacher to guide him in his spiritual quest. Yogananda's seeking after various saints mostly ended when he met his guru, Swami Yukteswar Giri, in 1910, at the age of 17. He describes his first meeting with Yukteswar as a rekindling of a relationship that had lasted for many lifetimes --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 2 Sep 2011

This book is a revelation. It tells the story of how a yogi learns, lives and gives back to his community. I enjoyed reading all about the trials and achievements of this particular young man and I learned a lot from it. Very interesting and enjoyable with lots of thought provoking examples of how a yogi works.

5.0 out of 5 stars A divine read! - no pictures though 12 Jun 2014

A great classic, poetically written at times, accessible (barely any Sanskrit unlike many other yoga books), a must for those on the yoga path but also for those simply interested. I found myself pacing down to be able to enjoy this book a little longer!

Read this superb little book before reading The Holy Science by Sri Yukteswar.

I actually enjoyed the newer edition with the extra chapter, although many people have said they prefer the original edition.

A worthwhile book that resonates in the 21st Century.
