Product Description

Product Description

Only people with autism truly know what it's like to be autistic - and even then, every autistic individual is unique! This award-winning short film by Rory Hoy, an 18-year-old filmmaker with autism, provides a privileged glimpse into his autistic world, letting us take a journey through his everyday experience and see it through his eyes. In easy, accessible terms, Rory explains what having autism means for everyday functioning: what it's like, for instance, not to have the natural inclination to respond to someone who calls you by your name, or someone who waves at you; what it's like to take someone literally when actually they have used a figure of speech. He describes the confusion caused by high noise levels, crowded environments and even by his own emotions and physical sensations, as well as the security and comfort found in routines, forward planning and having thoughtful, calm and loving people around him. This engaging, insightful and light-hearted film will be invaluable to people with autism, their friends and family, and to professionals working with them. A booklet explaining the film, also compiled by the author, accompanies the DVD.

I have seen this film 2 times now at various Autism conferences and as a parent of an autistic boy it gives me hope and makes me smile, as well as making me laugh out loud i also have to hold my tears back and swallow the lump in my throat. I have now had the pleasure of seeing Rory do a question and answer session and i can honestly say he is such an inspiration and a charming young man, if my son turns out anything like Rory i will be a very happy mum! This is a must see film for anyone who's life is touched or affected by autism.

I have a 9 yr old autistic boy. This film is fantastic. It sums my child up completly. We sat down with him and his 6 yr old sister and watched as a family.
After the film he turned to me and said how nice it was that the boy in the film is just like him. He puts Rory on all the time now. As if connecting with him.
We have asked family/friends/teachers and non teaching staff to watch the film.
They have all commented about certain aspects of the film and how they didnt realise how slight things can affect autistic children.
A MUST HAVE FILM if you want to show others and A MUST HAVE FILM for any child /family with Autism. Well done Rory for explaining things so easily.
