Product Description

Product Description

Autism is a puzzling disorder. It begins in early childhood and disrupts many aspects of development, leaving the child unable to form social relationships in the usual ways or to communicate normally. In a non-technical way, this book explains what is known about the condition. In addition it provides helpful information about relevant organizations. Primarily aimed at parents and interested professionals, it presents fact-based summaries of the different aspects of autism and covers the recognition and diagnosis of autism, its biological and psychological causes, and the various treatments and educational techniques available for autism.

Once your child is diagnosed it is very easy to fall into the "buy every book going on the subject" world. This book is good, but it is so like all the others. If you are looking for some answers and help - find a self help group with parents of special needs children. I did this and have learnt more in 7 hours (over 7 weeks) than I did reading 8 books (@130 GBP's) on the subject. These parents have tried and tested real ideas. And keep your head up - it will get better

I found this book very disappointing. It describes the classic face of autism and does not, as the title might infer, cover the whole autistic spectrum. This book only serves to strengthen the widely held misconceptions about autism. If you are looking for an up-to-date book covering the full autistic spectrum, then this is not what you are looking for.

This book is a simple summary of the condition. Very easy to read and extremely enlightening. It was the first book I read after my daughter was diagnosed and although I have read several more since then this is the one I come back to time and time again. I would recommend anyone who wants to know the basic facts of autism to buy this book.
