AN EXORBITANTLY OVERPRICED OBSOLETE DINOSAUR - there is another - much less costly - alternative 6 Dec. 2014
By Gengler - Published on Amazon.com
Richter reigns supreme - even in the recordings in this box set which do not show him at the height of his interpretive powers. Re-sellers are currently charging exorbitant rates for this set. Unless you're a collector intent to put it in an acrylic box for safe keeping, along with your shellac 78 RPMs of Toscanini that were going to be worth thousands some day.

There is another box set set for release in January 2015 that includes all of these recordings, as well as Richter's Decca and DG recordings: Complete Decca, Philips & DG Recordings (Limited Edition)

A total of 51 discs from the three major labels. Of course, you will still want to supplement these with many of Richter's Praga and Archiv gems, but with the new box set you will have the nucleus of a solid Richter collection.

And with all the money you'll save, you can purchase a few of those Pragas as well -

Fantastic pianism, but don't buy it.... 4 Oct. 2008
By Y.P. - Published on Amazon.com
Further update: The box to get is Complete Decca, Philips & DG Recordings (Limited Edition), which I have pre-ordered.

Update: One more reason not to buy this box. There is a new Richter box set Richter: Solo Recordings which contains almost everything in that box plus more. (Only the bonus disc in that box was not included.) The new box-set linked above contains 33 CDs, compared with 21 CDs of this old box. Plus, it costs less than $130 at the time of this update. Enjoy!

... unless this box sells for $200 or less. Instead, buy the re-release of this collection plus more: 11 volumes of 2 CD sets "Richter the Master", e.g. Vol. 1: Beethoven - Piano Sonatas, published jointly by Decca and Philips. Richter might not be everybody's favorite pianist, but all would agree that he is one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. His playing carries such level of intensity that I have never heard from any other pianists. This collection is without doubt piano playing and music making at the highest level.

"The rhythm in Richter's performances makes one feel that the whole work lies before him like an immense landscape, revealed to the eye at a single glance" -- Heinrich Neuhaus
