This is Robert Cray at the time he was at his most fiery and creative. A blues guitarist and singer not content to sit within the usual constraints of the idiom, but keen to explore its musical possibilities, whilst staying true to his roots.
I would love to have been at this concert, especially with Fabulous Thunderbirds on the same bill!

Cray treats us to many of his best known songs on this album, plus great versions of Natural Ball and Back At The Chicken Shack. The band works really well together; tight, yet with the ability to swing easily.

The sound is good throughout, but as the previous reviewer said, we could probably do without the introductions to the songs, which are a little tedious! However, a very minor point, that does not detract from the great music, which is much better than the double CD, "Live Across The Pond", which came out a couple of years ago.

All in all, an absolute treat for Robert Cray fans, and for anyone who likes "modern" guitar based blues with a touch of soul!

I'm not sure why this live recording from 1987 of an outdoor music festival in Austin, Texas first broadcast on the King Biscuit Flour Hour radio programme has been issued now, 23 years after the event. It features Cray following his "Strong Persuader" album and many of the tracks are from that record as well as earlier albums, such as the absolutely wonderful "Bad influence", "Don't touch me baby" and "Phone booth". The sound and balance is excellent throughout, with Robert's guitar right up front in the mix and sounding much more prominent and cutting than on the records. I always think that Robert's blues songs can sound a bit bland but on these live tracks his guitar and particularly his vocals seem to have much more authority and bite. We also get the old Jimmy Smith instrumental "Back at the chicken shack", which I don't think Robert has featured on record before. (I do think someone should have edited out the intros were Robert repeatedly says "This one here is called..." which get a bit tedious after a while.)

Robert Cray has re invented himself over the years and this recording is a great introduction to him as he broke into the scene with 'Strong Persuader'.

Unusal album in that it's more about the the overall sound the Band makes and less on Robert Cray's outstanding guitar playing. I always prefer his live music to his studio work because it's sharper whereas the latter is overproduced and lacks the bite and feels too sanitised.

So if you're expecting to hear brilliant extended solos that Robert Cray is capable of, this is not for you and why I haven't rated it 5 stars but as an album that has a good sound, it's well worth worth it.
