This work by Conrad Leyser is an excellent introduction to those with only the vaguest idea about the concept of asceticism. It also has material for those interested in the topic from an academic stand point. It expertly conveys, in a thoroughly readable manner, the trends and influences on authority and asceticism through the period. It also provides key information about several important figures in Church history. The sections, especially those on St Augustine and St Benedict, provide both an interesting and concise introduction to the individuals but at the same time also gives more depth where appropriate. I would recommend to anyone interested in the topic, that they read this and not be put off by the price.
