This book contains many useful tips and techniques on hand sewing, construction, making alterations etc. Although it was intended as a guide to accompany Butterick patterns, the techniques can be applied to any dressmaking of the period.
I was, however, a little disapointed to find that it is not in fact "Authentic Victorian" at all, but actually dates from 1905 and is american, so in no way is it a victorian book.

This is a reprint of a sewing book from the early 20th century, so strictly speaking it's Edwardian rather than Victorian. However, plenty of the techniques are still valid for Victorian clothing and it's a fascinating little book, with some real insights into historical dressmaking. The main benefit of this book over so many others is that the instructions are original – this is how real people constructed their clothes at the time – rather than designed to be used by 'costumers' and therefore all about using modern techniques to create a historical 'look'.

I have never seen a book with so much detail about how victorians made clothing...bustles, dust ruffles, how to bone correctly, etc. Its a must have if you sew repros, costumes, doll dresses, etc. Wow!
