I'm just getting into Crossfit...and wanted to buy a fast speed rope to master my double unders at home....this is NOT the rope to buy.
I'm very disappointed with this rope - if you want the "ultimate speed rope", forget it. First of all there is the weight of it....if you're looking forward to slamming 200 double unders in 2 minutes, as I am, you want the handle and line that is as light as possible and fast as possible. Anyone who has waved their arms around without any handles and lines knows this is hard enough as it is without making the handle and rope any heavier than they need it to be. Although these handles appear well made, these chunky wooden handles are not as light as simple plastic cone handles. They're more like martial art sticks than light speed friendly handles.
Secondly the line itself....its thick, heavy, plastic and like a bungy. It's worse in every regard compared with a simple, light metal cable/wire. It is certainly thicker....and thickness is the main reason it is very slow and noisy through the air...it's like skipping through treacle compared with what I was using at the gym (gym speed rope had a plastic covered thin metal wire). Its also like a stretchy bungy....so as you approach speed it stretches and goes longer...what on earth is the point in that? A rope that changes length with speed?! Also, perhaps because of the weight and plastic, I've hit my arms with this line and its really really hurt...get whipped with this heavy bungy and you know about it.
Because this was my home rope, I bought this hoping it would the Rolls Royce of speed ropes, beautiful and fast...unfortunately it's no good at all. I've given it two stars because its quite well made, and perhaps the weight of it might actually make it good to train with for some people who want to wave heavy sticks around and skip through treacle... but it's still only slightly better than useless for what I want to use it for - speed roping.
Its a skip rope alright, so I cant send it back, but I've ordered an Ampro rope...which has (I assume) light plastic handles, like the one I've been using at the gym...not pretty but effective.... and a thin wire cable for speed and lightness.
If I get round to it, I may put a video up to show you the difference. But hugely disappointed.Read more ›
This rope seems to be getting quite a scathing that i don't feel is entirely justified. As someone who has been doing Crossfit for a few months as well i was looking to this rope as an RX alternative (getting those things into the country is a bit of a nightmare) The handles are large but they are not particularly heavy, assembly was easy enough and upon cracking it out got 10 DU's (my max atm is 22) without really concentrating wich is not bad seeing as I had not practiced in weeks and this was a new rope that i am not used to. Whilst i agree people may prefer a light weight cable with small handles, I personally i like this beast, it's well constructed and fit for purpose and I prefer something with a bit of a heavy swing (and a more forgiving whip). This is a decent enough if slightly expensive rope whether it is the rope for you is a personal thing.
Very robust and well built rope. Might be a tad on the short side if you're long, and if you prefer a lightweight handle then be forewarned this is quite heavy, but if you want strong but thin rope with good physical feedback from the handles then this is an excellent model.
