Book Description

Amazon #1 Bestseller!
Authentic Fire, by Michael L. Brown, is written in response to Strange Fire, written by Dr. John MacArthur. It is with good reason that pastors and leaders who differ with Dr. MacArthur on the issue of the Charismatic Movement do so with deference and respect, since his very substantial and beneficial contribution to the Church in this generation is undeniable. If we had more leaders like John MacArthur, the Church and the world would be in much better shape. But Pastor MacArthur's criticisms of the Charismatic Movement are inaccurate, unhelpful, often harshly judgmental, sometimes without scriptural support, and frequently divisive in the negative sense of the word. When he damns millions of godly believers, demeans the real work of the Spirit, accuses true worshipers of blaspheming the Spirit, and calls for an all-out war against the Charismatic Movement, a strong corrective is needed, along with a positive statement of the truth of the matter. Authentic Fire is not meant to be a rebuttal of Strange Fire at every point. Instead, while interacting at times with material from the book and conference, and while correcting what the author believes to be serious errors and misstatements, the book is more of a positive response to Strange Fire. Authentic Fire will serve a lasting, worthwhile purpose even for those who will never read Strange Fire.

5.0 out of 5 stars A robust yet gracious rebuttal of MacArthur 19 Dec. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Michael Brown demolishes the weak arguments outlined in John MacArthur's Strange Fire book and conference. He does so robustly but without resorting to divisive or schismatic language. Graciously Brown invites Cessationists to understand the biblical reasons why charismatics believe what we do. Charismatics are also reminded that we do need to be more discerning as there are indeed unhelpful extremes in our movement.

This book will help you think through these issues. It will fill charismatics with renewed confidence to boldly follow our convictions. It should also help cessationists appreciate that the Charismatic Movement does have something to teach the broader Church, even as we also have much to learn from others.

5.0 out of 5 stars I thoroughly recommend this book 6 Feb. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition
A much needed book in these last days, in a time where people are undermining the work of the Spirit,
this is balanced book that is both warming to John Macarthur as a brother and all those at the Strange
fire conference yet firm in pointing out the misstatements and overstatements of the conference. Biblically
balanced, I thoroughly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, informative and faith-building 17 Dec. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book far exceeded my expectations. Dr Brown has succeeded in not only countering arguments calculated to confuse or destroy faith in the present-day work of the Holy Spirit, but he's comprehensively established that there's an authentic fire in God to experience and live. Despite a mountain of other reading that I'm faced with while doing a Masters degree (and a current paper on revivals & revivalism!), I found this book hard to shelve for another day. The material quoted within it, drawn from a wide array of sources, is worth the book purchase in itself, but the way that Dr Brown weaves it together as a whole is brilliant.

For those who've preferred the apparent safety of the cessationist camp, I appeal to you to just simply read this with an open heart & mind; not just to the arguments therein, but to God Himself, Who yearns to manifest His rule in our day & generation, but needs a believing people to walk it out.

Thank you Dr Brown. I pray we, as evangelical Pentecostals (if such a label is fitting) know God's grace to not simply defend our stance (how hollow is that), but to live that fulness of life in the Spirit that's our calling today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent responce to counter serious error 19 Nov. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Very clear and balanced response to the attack on the Charismatic Movement by John Macarthur and others. Whilst agreeing that not all that has gone on in "Charismatic Circles" is of God (as would be true amongst any of God's people in any denomination) and at times there may well have been detractors planted by the enemy, the bulk of what has been happening is of God and is clearly Bible based. It would be ridiculous for Jesus to say we would do greater things when He went to the Father, and then withdraw the power to do them. If the promises of God were only for the early church leaders, why bother to tell us about them ?? And what is 1 Cor 12 & 14 all about ??. The gifts need to operate in an atmosphere of love - hence 1 Cor 13, but they DO NEED TO OPERATE. We do need to beware of the counterfeit, but why would there be counterfeit if there was not the genuine. I myself have seen a good number of genuine miracles today. I want to see more and am praying "Lord increase my faith". It is not about convincing folk to believe - as Jesus did masses of signs and wonders - yet few believed. It is about ensuring that there is no excuse. Jesus proved who He was. So did the Apostles. And we need to demonstrate the power of the gospel with signs. Like Michael Brown, I very much respect John Macarthur and use much of his excellent material, but cannot agree with the recent dangerous outburst which I believe is not bible based, and I an indebted to Michael Brown ffor laying out our defence so clearly from the scriptures.

An insightful, gracious response to Strange Fire. At the same time reaffirming authentic charismatic Christianity. I would recommend it thoroughly.
