5.0 out of 5 stars Namaste! 23 Feb. 2012
By Grandma - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Indian food makes a fairly frequent appearance in my house, though it is one of my daughters who is the expert Indian cook. (I'm still learning with a bit of help from YouTube) I do know enough about Indian food, though, to tell you that these are authentic recipes for things you will enjoy.

Author Jagi Egnell presents the dishes that she enjoyed growing up in the West, so you will find these very easy to accomplish with ingredients readily available in any grocery store. The one item that you might not be able to find readily available is Paneer, a fresh Indian cheese quickly & easily made at home. (See YouTube for instructions and recipes.) Jagi does point out that you can use tofu instead.

The book is nicely laid out and features an interactive Table of Contents that interfaces with the Kindle navigation menu. Egnell is careful to give cooking and prep times, number of servings and even serving suggestions. Do try the Butter Chicken!

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have if You Like Indian Food 23 Feb. 2012

This book is dedicated to her daughter and niece. She wrote the book so they would't forget how to prepare her family recipes. I really like the recipes in this book and highly recommed purchasing this book. Note--the first time I opened this book it didn't open with the cover and table of contents so if this happens I reccomend going to the table of contents first before viewing the rest of the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A collection of East Indian recipes you're sure to enjoy. 27 Feb. 2012

This little collection of recipes (primarily from the Punjab region of India) fills the bill if you are looking for relatively easy and tasty dishes. I have lots of cookbooks and I find that many times when I download one, it contains metric measures which complicate things for me a bit. Not so for this one, thankfully. This book is totally user friendly, well written, clear and concise with ingredient lists which contain nothing out of the ordinary. I like many of my curries very hot, but this cookbook seems to cater to those with less rugged palettes so you can enjoy the spices without the heat if you prefer. There are many dishes presented here which cater to vegetarians, but there are also some recipes for meat and poultry dishes which add a balance.

All told, this is a nice representation of wonderful East India cooking which is enjoyable regardless of the season, and I highly recommend you add this little gem to your cookbook collection. Easy 4 ½ stars from me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst. butter. chicken. ever. 10 Aug. 2012
By C. Cutler - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was very excited to try the Butter Chicken (Murg Makhani) recipe in this book, as I adore butter chicken. A good butter chicken is rich, spicy and indulgent - I could drink the sauce, and might even consider bathing in it - it's really THAT delicious. Unfortunately, the recipe in this book is none of those things. I should have known better when I saw the recipe called for 3 cans of chicken broth. (that's almost 5 cups, in contrast to the 1 cup of cream). You would have to reduce that for 3 weeks to get it to the right consistency. No butter in sight anywhere. The sauce was very thin, had none of the richness and "wow" factor of a good butter chicken, and the taste wasn't there. If you are looking for the heavenly concoction served at Indian restaurants all over America, this isn't it. Very disappointing. After that disaster, I don't see any point in trying the rest of the recipes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nicely done! 28 Mar. 2012

I have always enjoyed Indian food at restaurants, but I just recently started adventuring into the world of Indian cooking. Authentic Cuisine-East Indian Cooking at Home has a number of fine recipes that I found fairly easy to follow. I've already made the Curry Chicken and Chawal, and plan to give the Palak Paneer and Gajar Mattar a try next. Get fully stocked on crucial Indian spices (though there are dozens more one can get beyond the cumin, coriander, turmeric, cardamom, clove, chiles, and paprika...not to mention an endless array of blends for Garam Masala and Chaat Masala), and get ready to enjoy East Indian cuisine at home. Jagi Egnell has created a well done cookbook!
