First, my copy matches the ISBN listed here and the recommended price, however there are differences (Amazon errors?) .. it's not really a hardcover, it's more glossy card. My copy has 576 pages, not 624.
This book is packed with colour photos, most of which are useful but some are too small and others useless - e.g. "Apples on display in Adelaide's Central Market", hmmm I think we all know what apples look like.
There's a pretty good brief history of Oz at the front of the book which goes into just enough detail.
There are lots of maps, road and street, though it's debatable if you'd want to carry this book around the streets with you because it's not light.
What I think this book lacks is enthusiasm and recommendations. Everything's presented in a matter of fact style. No attempt is made to guide you to the "must see" sights, you're just given a huge number of places/attraction descriptions, often hundreds of miles from one to the next and it's up to you to guess which are worth going to see. Because of that, this book isn't an easy read, it's a bit like wading through an encyclopedia - everything's there, but it's disjoint.
If I was driving around Oz over 2+ months, this book would be perfect companion to a road atlas. For a short trip to see the major sights and attractions, I'd opt for something smaller, lighter and cheaper such as the "AA Spiral Guide Australia".
