Product Description

Review

Library Journal "The designs, which are romantic enough for the most ardent of Austenites but modern enough for everyday wear or use, are suitable for crocheters of a variety of skill levels, and written directions are provided for all designs, with charts for the more complex items."

Bought this for my kindle for ipad (so in colour). I have made the mans scarf, pattern was easy to follow and came out nicely. Not tackled anything else yet.

Patterns have no difficulty rating, if you are a beginer you may find it hard to know what to tackle, although there are some easier patterns in here, you just have to read the patterns to figure them out.

There are maybe three patterns i would make, some are too fussy, some just unpracticle (the crocheted pj's just don't do it for me).

As another reviewer says its frustrating they have gone with "arty" shots to illustrate. What does the front of the ruffle skirt look like? I'm not going to invest all that time to find out i hate the front!

I dislkie the format for the kindle. There is no photo index so you have to leaf through every pattern to see what you want. The layout of the patterns look awkward on the screen and there are no hyperlinks to pattern notes/stiitch guides. Basically no thought has gone into digitalising this book.

I bought it on the kindle for speed, but would probably buy the paperback if i had a reasonable wait (i'm in Oz).

Why make such clunky Kindle books?

I really enjoyed reading through this crochet book. It has quizzes, snippets of information, and lives up to Melissa Horozewski's intention of entertaining her readers. The patterns are very interesting, one or two are not really my scene, like the 'Jane Bennet Skirt' on page 95, but at least you do not have to add the ruffles, which I feel, do not make the skirt more appealing. But on the whole the patterns are pretty, useful and wearable. I particularly liked the 'Becoming Jane Sweater', on page 40 and 'Lizzy's Lace Mantlet' on page 111.

It is inspirational...it makes me want to pick up my 'hook' BUT I've only given it 3stars because of the difficulty in trying to match the yarns used.It is American and uses American terminology, not so bad you may say and if that were all I would agree. However it's the yarn substitution that's the BIG problem,e.g. sport yarn it is neither 4ply nor dk but somewhere in between so you have to find a 'heavier' 4ply or 'lighter'dk then SWATCH, SWATCH, AND SAWTCH AGAIN.The same is true with what they call 'worsted' it can be either aran or dk,this one is a little easier as light worsted is the term used (but not always) for dk.Lets not go into the area of Bulky ........so not for the 'feint' hearted.

Dear Reader,

I am exceptionally enamoured with Miss Austin's novels and find them most effecting. I spend many an evening by my fireside, ruining my eyesight, crocheting by lamplight. The combination of all things Austinesque with crochet was, indeed, compelling. As soon as heard about this book, my heart was a flutter and I ran to my computer, with alacrity, and ordered it from Amazon.

I must confess that I feel most mean spirited in only awarding it four stars as I enjoyed all the Austin references immensely. However, I find that some of the designs, clever as they are, are not particularly wearable. It is a truth universally acknowledged that not all garments can be, or indeed should be, rendered in crochet. Nevertheless, I will attempt to make at least three or four items from this book. I have certainly found it to be an amusing and diverting work.
