5.0 out of 5 stars Pure craft..!, 11 Oct 2008
By Peter H. Mussell (Lancashire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was introduced to Aurora by a friend in 1976. After countless tape and CD auditions it is still one of my all-time favourite albums. It is an excellent `driving album.' (if there is such a thing!)

It is evening and you are leaving work. As the light fades, you ease through the traffic to 'Renaissance', your fingers gently drumming on the steering wheel. It starts to rain. You don't care.

'Renaissance' is not a complex piece, just perfect for that purpose. Each track morphs into the next. 'Aurora (pt1)', 'Passenger of the Dark' and 'Lost Forest' complement each other. It is relaxing without being soporific. Just short of forty minutes the album finishes. Your finger automatically reaches again for the 'play' button...'Is Once Enough?'..No.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended jazz rock fusion violin, 4 Aug 2004
This review is from: Aurora (Audio CD)
Highly recommended jazz rock fusion violin - sounds awful but actually this is a lovely album.

It was recommended to me by the violinist from the band Solstice, and being 17 and very easily influenced, I rushed right out and bought it.

I still have the album, 20 years later, and it still gets a spin on the record deck from time to time. Lilting, occasionally ferocious, always highly musical jazz violin, melodic but with lots of improvisation, this is a summery album and it's a joy from beginning to end.

If memory serves, it also features Daryl Stuermer on lead guitar (who was part of the live incarnation of Genesis in the early '80's). Ponty was part of Frank Zappa's band too.
