Imagine walking down the street and finding an unmarked VHS tape. Curiosity peaked you take it home and pop it in. What starts off as two men screwing around with a video camera quickly transforms into an ultra-realistic torture sequence where the unidentified psychopaths tape their exploits as they torment, and violate a woman tied to a chair. The sodomy of your morals continues throughout the entirety of the footage, while subtly revealing the killer's shattered pasts via the interaction with their victims and each other. The most shockingly realistic portrait of a serial killer's existence is, Fred Vogel's August Underground.

5.0 out of 5 stars unbelievable 23 Aug 2008
By Jabron1
this is the only film i have watched which has made me feel ashamed for having watched it. it will stay with you long after viewing it and you will probably need to take a shower straight after it ends. make no mistake about it this is the most hardcore horror/gore film you can find (it's even harder to watch than "faces of death" or any of the like). the sypnosis above states that the film will "sodomise your values" and i think that's pretty spot on.

i have watched tonnes of extreme horror but this is as shocking and nasty as it gets. like i said before you will actually question why you are watching it at all, which is a good thing as violence should make us feel that way. none of it is glamorous at all and it really hits home.

the acting is very good. effects and camerawork are all very well done. the look goes a long way to making the film so disturbing as it really feels like a tape you could have stumbled across in the woods.

i think this film should be seen as more of an indurance test than entertainment. i'm not one to buy into hype so i went into this film a bit cynical but was speechless throughout the whole thing and only watched on out of morbid interest.

buy this, invite some friends around and get some bowls ready for those with a weak stumoch. PS if after having watched this you actually want more there are 2 sequals which somehow outdo this ("august underground mordum" and "august underground penance"

1.0 out of 5 stars Standards 8 Oct 2013
A sensationally ridiculous attempt to shock, sicken and or gasp from the would be viewer to which it gets the necessary kudos of most controversial of all time status.

Its not and it didn't with me. It is a pathetic piece of garbage from a bunch of sad sacks with nothing else constructive to do. Basically whats involved is a bunch of sadists go about torturing, raping, killing and other worse acts to all kinds of species each and every day. Filmed in wonky tonky camcorder style, 80% of the running time is blurred and shuddered from focus anyway. Acting and any sort of fundermental elements and standards involved in film making, screenplay etc is non existant.

Its appalling, don't even bother with the two sequels either, just as awful.. Avoid like the plague.

P.S I was forced to watch these back to back, hopefully nobody else will suffer the same affliction as I did, thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fake Snuff at it's best!!! 11 Jan 2008
If you're looking for a film where you actually ask yourself is this real or is it fake then this is the one for you.
I first discovered this film about half a year ago after reading a review about it on a website and felt compelled to get it.
The film is all about these two serial killers going out and having abit of "fun"... what they mean by that is killing, torturing and raping anyone that gets in their way. Unlike any other serial killer film, this one doesn't glorify violence in the slightest, in fact even the hardest of gorehounds and exploitation fans like myself will just feel sick to the bone about what the do to these poor helpless people they encounter.

There was times when watching this film that i thought i was actually watching a real snuff film and thought i needed to turn it off but something wouldn't let me.
What makes it look so real is the poor picture quality, this was a deliberate action by the director to de-grade the film it was shot on to give it that home-movie feel.
Overall if you think you can hack the onslaught of pure savagery then check it out, if not Amazon got a whole stock of Bambi waiting to be purchased. Happy shopping!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Art-house horror at it's best. 28 Feb 2013
August Underground starts with a mutilated naked woman tied up. Two men: our hero and an unseen camera man come in, wipe their muddy boots on her and begin to tease, torment and sexually abuse her. All this happens with a mutilated dead man lying in a bath tub. The makeup and affects are really well done and very realistic. They return to the scene later to spread her with feces. Another early scene involves a hitchhiker who gets sexually abused and beaten to death.
What makes this a very interesting film is it then goes on to show us our duo going through life having fun, causing trouble at a nu-metal gig, visiting a farm, getting up to pranks which bring some great black comedy moments and gives our killers real characters. Despite how they treat most people they are respectful to the comic shop owner / tattooist.
The film works so well as it is filmed by hand held camera which has a poor picture in parts but very clear in the scenes that matter. It demonstrates people's primal instincts. It's wonderful, intelligent and horrible in equal measure. Art-house horror at its best.

3.0 out of 5 stars August Underground 29 April 2012
By Hints
Ok so lets clear something up. This is not the sickest film you will ever watch. Infact really its that bad. The acting is good as is the camera work. However there is nothing new or shocking that has not been done before. The excellent Inside for starters. If you want extreme film making go in the direction of the shocking Murder Set Pieces. The film works ok & the violence is at times shocking but again we have seen it before & to a more disturbing conclusion. A good film for the hrd core collectors anyone else should take note that you can by more violent & shocking uncut in the uk video market.
