An album that's definitely not included in the first rank of Clapton's work by the blues/rock purists, but don't write it off. True, it's characterised by the typical mid-80s slick mega-production values, with Nathan East's bass prominent, but you can't ignore the fact that there are numerous melodic songs lifted out of the ordinary by Clapton's classy vocal performance and some inspired guitar work. Stand outs include the well known Behind the Mask and Miss You, but Bad Influence, Take a Chance,Walk Away and Holy Mother - featuring a plaintive solo - don't let the side down. August wasn't such a trend bucker as 461 Ocean Boulevard, and it's certainly of its time - but it's still well worth a listen as part of a singular guitarist's musical history.
