I am moved to write my first review ever of anything because I feel this is such a good product and could be outclassing machines costing so much more. As it is it is a compete bargain. It gives the facility to watch and record Freeview SD and Freeview HD. Many of the reviews here are not correct about the negative sides of the device.

Lip synch is not an issue with the updated software (oddly not posted on August's web site, but given by email, as stated in a review here), but there are some annoying features - some of which August are planning to correct.

Before I give a list of annoying 'features' I must just say again that at a price below £40 it is an amazing bargain. I looked up to £150 and could not find a device that suited me better. OK it does not have a built in hard drive - but I actually think that is a plus - most of the boxes with built in HDD do not allow you to take the recording off to archive on DVD or computer; so the HDD fills up and you are forced to delete. With August you can attach an external HDD if you like - for about £60 you can get a 2TB external HDD; so the August device would cost under £100 and have way more space than other devices. Better however, in my view, to just pop a memory stick into it; then after some recordings take the memory stick to a computer and archive the ones you want to keep. This saves the money for upgrading your computer's hard drive!

There are some annoying (and potentially easily solved) issues with the recording feature:

(1) Recorded programme file name does not have the programme title (just channel and date and time) - this you can edit on computer, but it would be easily solved by August

(2) There is no automatic record time padding feature to avoid chopping late programs.

The August HD receiver is perfect for those with an older HD TV that doesn't have an internal HD freeview receiver.

The unit was sent to me to test and I found it to be very compact and easy to setup, plug your aerial into the receiver, and a HDMI cable from the receiver into your TV and you're ready to scan for channels.

Turn everything on and the box will complete the setup process for you, scanning for available channels in both standard definition and high definition. As soon as it's finished scanning the first thing you'll want to do is compare a standard channel with it's HD version as you'll immediately see the difference, HD picture quality is excellent, visually it's far better than standard definition and it breathes new life into an aging TV set.

The remote is OK, it's fairly small compared to most remotes these day and it feels rather cramped.

On the front of the unit is a USB port, this allows you to plug a USB stick in and use this to record TV shows. This area could do with a bit of work, while it's functional and works OK, it's not easy to use and I don't think YouView/Virgin/Sky have anything to be especially worried about.

For a second TV, perhaps the old one in the bedroom, this is a brilliant way to add HD channels. If you're looking for something in the living room then it'd be better to investigate freeview recorders/YouView boxes, as they offer a far slicker recording system and some have additional features such as catch up services.

I purchased the DVB400 due to the recent changes to Freeview that caused my current top-set box to constantly freeze.
Luckly the DVB400 did not have any issues with the recent changes and performed wonderfully and was stable as a rock.
You get both SD and HD freeview channels and they can both be viewed via SCART (although you won't get the full effect of
HD channels). However, the channels spring to life when viewed via HTMI. Even the SD channels look so much better through
HTMI. The pictures are so much crisper and sharper and the colours are wonderful.
Note: The default HTMI setting is 1080i so I recommend changing to 1080p.

As mentioned in other reviews there are some minor issues with the EPG, but as with all top-set boxes they are never
perfect. With software updates these issues could potentially be fixed in the near future.

The DVB400 also allows you to schedule timer events to watch or
record (onto a USB memory stick or harddrive). This can be done via the EPG or manually via the Timer button on your remote.
So if you wish your Freeview box to change channels at a certain time to watch or record your favourite program you can do this.
The Timer feature also allows you to modify the start and end times, so you can make a timer event start a few minutes earlier and
end a few minutes later if you are concerned that a program may overrun.

Note the cost of the DVB400, so don't expect the same features as a Sky+ or Tivo box. You can't schedule to record a whole series
or watch a recorded program whilst you are actively recording, but you still get so much value for your money.

The remote control is rather small but can be replaced by a Univeral Remote with 'learn' feature (I got a One 4 All remote).
