Book Description

14 Mar 2013
A magnificent new printing of this classic edition of John James Audubon's masterwork In this latest printing of the Baby Elephant Folio edition of Audubon's Birds of America, the thumbnail images accompanying the descriptive captions are printed in full color for the convenience of the reader. This printing also features an attractive new binding cloth, in a sumptuous teal color. The Baby Elephant Folio presents all 435 of Audubon's brilliant hand-colored engravings in exquisite reproductions derived from the original plates of the National Audubon Society's archival copy of the rare Double Elephant Folio. Although many attempts have been made to re-create the splendid illustrations in Audubon's masterpiece, nothing has ever equaled the level of fidelity achieved in this luxurious edition. Organized and annotated by Roger Tory Peterson and Virginia Marie Peterson, and issued with the full endorsement and cooperation of the Audubon Society, this volume is as informative as it is beautiful. Its fascinating introduction places Audubon in the context of the history of American ornithological art and also reproduces a wide sampling of the work of his notable predecessors and disciples, including Roger Tory Peterson's own rightfully famous paintings. A new systematic arrangement of the prints, following the modern classification of species, and descriptive captions about each bird allow us to appreciate Audubon's achievement in the light of modern ornithology.

2.0 out of 5 stars No Detail in Any of the Images! 22 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase
I love Audubon's work and although I didn't expect 'originals' I did expect to see some detail in the images, there is none in either the birds or the plants. Also, the colours are not bright and vivid as they should be.
I have had this book for almost a year but every time I opened it I was absolutely underwhelmed and angered by it - this is the reason I haven't written a review before, it upsets me so much.
Now I am moving house now and have just had another look and I still feel the same about it
So I am at last writing this review because I do not want anyone else to waste their money on it. If you just want glossy, flat, undefined representations of his work then it's ok but for the amount it costs you should expect more, as I did

5.0 out of 5 stars a treasure 15 Mar 2014
By James F. Housel - Published on Amazon.com
Not sure why this hasn't been reviewed before. It has been out for a while. This is a magnificently printed edition is 1/4 the size of Audubon's huge original. It is a LARGE book best displayed open on a stand. That way you can have a different bird ever day and your life will be measurably improved! One could argue that this is the greatest work ever produced in America, technically impeccable, scientifically precise, artistically inspired. Well worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Ideal Presentation of an Artistic and Scientific Masterpiece 23 Jun 2014
By Corey Lidster - Published on Amazon.com
At 13 x 16 inches, 700 pages, and almost 20 pounds, this is as much a monument as it is a book, and a beautiful one at that. With a slipcase that features a wraparound image that matches the books spine to continue across its 5 inch width, as well as a clothbound top and bottom, Abbeville Press made sure that this 'baby elephant folio' edition is a work of art to be displayed. The sheer size makes reading it a bit of a physical ordeal, but it's an effort well rewarded by the perfection of the reproductions. The tiniest of details can be easily appreciated in this format, and the colors look more vibrant; compared with other, cheaper editions like 'Audubon's Masterpieces', the difference is glaringly obvious. Even when taking examples from the excellent Skira-Rizzoli volume 'Audubon's Aviary', which collects the original watercolor paintings by Audubon, the plates so meticulously engraved (by Robert Havell Jr.) and colored manage to surpass the source material. It is a testament to the golden age of the lost art of engraving, to the determination and passion that pushed Audubon through years of study and work, and to the undiminished influence of the new worlds' first great artist, ornithologist, and natural historian. While reprinting 'The Birds of America' in the original 'elephant folio' edition -- five leatherbound volumes large enough to depict even the biggest subjects lifesized, around two-&-a-half feet wide x three-&-a-half feet tall -- remains completely unfeasible, this publication serves well as the ideal way to experience Audubon's accomplishment.
5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Audobon Artwork 21 Jun 2014

Very beautiful artwork of many species of birds. This is a large volume of work and makes an excellent birthday present. I chose this particular book because it resembles a volume my husband would look through in the library when he was a child.
