5.0 out of 5 stars Audubon Field Guide to North American Birds 2 May 2013
Format:Vinyl Bound|Amazon Verified Purchase
I saw this book in Academy of Science Museum in San Francisco and ordered it when I got home. The copy I received was bound in plastic making it genuinely a field guide. It was advertised as 'like new' and it was. Very pleased with the seller's description. About 1/3 of the book is made up of good quality photographs, showing the birds in detail. The other 2/3 comprises technical descriptions. I took a lot of photographs around 'San Fran' though I am not a 'birder' and this book is making subsequent identification very quick and easy. 2.0 out of 5 stars Audubon Bird Field Guide - Western USA 28 July 2011
By Crispin
Format:Vinyl Bound
Some 20 years ago I lived in PQ Canada for a while and bird watched with one of the admirable Petersen series. The Audubon book concentrates too much on the illustrations - incomplete as it happens - and the indexing is hopeless. Its too heavy for a pocket "identifier" as well. Sorry folks but I only bought it because it was free and my expedition to Montana and the Rockies was due and I had mislaid my Peterson (western USA}.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great field guide! 28 July 2010
By wallace - Published on Amazon.com

We like this field guide due to the initial step of id by silhouette. Just find the shape that seems right and you will be well on your way to an accurate id. Once you have the shape, you can go to the family pics of 584 real birds, not paintings as in Peterson guides, for color, size, gender, then to the detailed descriptions for colors of plummage, legs, beak and so forth, voice, habitat, nesting, and range. That initial shape guide, by solid black silhouettes puts us in the right ball park time after time. I just bought a second copy so we can keep one at the cabin. This is my husband's go to guide book. Highly recommend.

The Audubon bird book is the very best. Easy to use and understand. Great information on all birds. Color pages are great.

A true classic. Often refer to this book as I live in a new area and many birds are new to me.
