As a huge fan of Audrey i waited patiently for the latest tomb to arrive on my doorstep, what a disappointment. All the pictures, except one or two id seen before ,used in other books, i noted that some of the pictures were not correct in date or locations. Still its another Audrey book to put with my collection and even though its a disapointment i still get pleasure from leafing through, looking at the beatiful well laid out photos.
I'm quite a fan of the 'Life in Pictures' book series. They are always very well put together with stunning quality, usually quite rare glossy photographs (in b&w and colour) and a mini biography as an introduction.
The Audrey Hepburn book follows this pattern, a short but sweet autobiography of the lady at the start with a foreword by her close friend/collaborator Givenchy, then page after page of gorgeous photos taken over the years of Audrey's life, from her days as an aspiring ballerina, to becoming a major film star and leading lady, to her humanitarian work in her later years with UNICEF. There are several beautiful candid photographs included, for example Hepburn relaxing of the movie set of 'Roman Holiday' or in the hospital after the birth of her first son. The majority of the pictures are very well presented, very clear and sharp, although there are a few that are more grainy (presumably rarer photos where clearer versions were available). The majority fill the entire page, and are accompanied by short tags giving the date or names of the people in the photographs with Audrey. There are also a number of quotes about Audrey presented throughout the pages, by both herself and people who knew her.
The book has it's flaws though. For example, I'd say around 75% of the book is comprised of photographs of Audrey in the 1950's, which is strange as argueably her finest work was done in the 1960's. Also, some parts of her life/work are completely missed out. I was surprised to see there wasn't a single photo of Audrey in maybe her most famous role 'My Fair Lady', and only a handful from the 'Breakfast At Tiffany's' film....
However the quality of the book overall is outstanding, and one of the finest tributes I own to the lady, so I'd overlook the flaws and definatly add this one to your collection.Read more ›
I gave this book to my grandaughter who, like myself ,is a great fan of Audrey Hepburn. It was such a thrill to learn more of her life through the lovely pictures. Definitely to be recommended to any of her fans.
