Product Description

Review
'The prose in these passages is elegiac and affecting, but it has the sharp, visceral feel of the butcher's knife or surgeons scalpel a highly compulsive, one-sitting read, and Audition should add to the Renaissance Man's growing fanbase in the English speaking world' Irvine Welsh, Guardian 'Murakami has gained a reputation as a diagnostician of Japanese culture in the Bret Easton Ellis/Chuck Palahniuk mode for all his gory details, and his insistence that modern life is just one more movie, Murakami remains a romantic. Trauma and nostalgia may defeat each other, but there's always hope in the form of the next generation' Telegraph PRAISE FOR PIERCING 'There are echoes here of Edgar Allan Poe and Dostoevsky - Murakami shares their fascination with the darkest layer of the soul, and the appalling isolation of the criminal. Creepy and gripping' The Times 'The fame, or even notoriety, of Ryu Murakami lies in his ability to write tightly plotted, well-written tales of violence, seedy sex and horror combined with a vivid sense of the neon-slashed but oppressive atmosphere of the Tokyo street, all underpinned with a fashionable nihilism' Sunday Telegraph

Product Description
Documentary-maker Aoyama hasn't dated anyone in the seven years since the death of his beloved wife, Ryoko. Now even his teenage son Shige has suggested he think about remarrying. So when his best friend Yoshikawa comes up with a plan to hold fake film auditions so that Aoyama can choose a new bride, he decides to go along with the idea. Of the thousands who apply, Aoyama only has eyes for Yamasaki Asami, a young, beautiful, delicate and talented ballerina with a turbulent past. But there is more to her than Aoyama, blinded by his infatuation, can see, and by the time he discovers the terrifying truth it may be too late Ryu Murakami delivers his most subtle and disturbing novel yet, confirming him as Japan's master of the psycho-thriller.

4.0 out of 5 stars Murakami plays the psychological game again, 5 Jun 2009
This is my 3rd Murakami after reading 'In the miso soup' and 'Piercing'.
Based on the fact that he is one of my best authors and the reviews for the horror movie based on the book was good....I decided to read it.

Again Murakami plays the psychological game though this time the two main charecters do communicate which makes you think that there is now way anything would happen when it is just a natural story about finding love froma point of view of a man who lost his wife 7 years ago.

I gave it 4 stars becasue:
1st The patience that was a factor in this book which makes your brain think twice about what is gonna happen when everything is very smooth and at the same time knowing that something terrible ought to happen and evrytime you turn a page you see nothing but a natural beauty and love.
2nd Although evrything unfolds after reading 3/4 of the book you still ask the question of how many in a million will turn out to be like that...very minimal....

The only bad thing here is if a person wasn't patient enough and someone is to pick this book as a first one for teh author, you might find it very annoying.....
I watched the movie after reading this and honestly the movie ends well but different than the book slightly, but both ways is good. The movie contains very horrible scenes, you typical Takashi Miike movie.

1.0 out of 5 stars dire, 28 May 2009
By anonymous (london) - See all my reviews
what a disappointment. i have read miso soup by murakami and was spell bound by the mirky and dangerous atsmosphere he created in this novel. but what i realised interested me most in miso soup was his philosophical musings on violence and crime. i expected much of the same from this novel. i could not believe i was reading the same author. it's main fault is that the story is just so uninteresting we know what will happen before it does and unfortunately that happens far too late in the novel. we wait until well over three quarters in before any action and by then we dont particularly care. the book was all about the characters and the story and it is quite clear that neither story nor character is murakami's strength - neither were believable and whilst in the miso soup is also far fetched the world that is created is charged with fear and meaning not so in this novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read, 21 May 2009

(REAL NAME)
It does take a little while to get to the point of the story but once you're there, your mind get in a new world of suspicion and suspense, and you're right to feel that way. I am a big fan of Ryu Murakami and this book is definately one of his best.
