5.0 out of 5 stars WHOA! 13 July 2012
Verified Purchase
As an artist on a tight budget, sometimes one has to make compromises. One such compromise that I've made previously is that I've never owned any serious reference monitors. I've always done the best I can to adapt to the deficiencies of the hardware available. The only studio-phones I've owned before now were a pair of Behringer HPS5000s. Although they served their purpose, the response was certainly NOT flat. They also were uncomfortable, and didn't withstand rough treatment by my kids at all.

This set from Audio-Technica blows the Behringer phones out of the water. Yes, they cost 3-4 times as much. That's why I never bought them (or similar) in the past. But bear in mind that a comparable pair from most other manufacturers (e.g. Sennheiser) will cost even more. They're comfortable, durable, user-serviceable, and most importantly of all have a FLAT response. This was easily tested by running a frequency sweep through them. I can see them lasting me a long time.

If you're not a musician or music producer, why might you want to buy these headphones? The answer is, if you have ever wanted to hear a track (or movie) as the editor/producer heard it. You can pump The Carpenters' "Close to You" through them, and you can hear exactly where every instrument is in the wide stereo mix. Then contrast with ABBA's "Dancing Queen", with their intense Wall of Sound making you feel like you're in the middle of an orchestra on crack. Compare Ronan Keating's take on "Fairytale of New York" with the original, and realise just how different they are. Standard consumer headsets are intended to make everything sound roughly the same, to appeal to the average acoustic palate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Budget Headphones for Professionals 9 Jun 2011
These were rated the No 1 budget headphones you can mix with, these are not meant for listening pleasure, not that they don't sound nice, but if you're looking for heavy bass, buy beats by dre! These are flat typically for monitoring, they're not gorgeous, but they really are quite truthful and extremely comfy, seriously recommended for pros on a budget!

Update:
I've been using these headphones for a week, i just finished treating my room with bass traps and absorbers, what really amazed me was how very similar my studio monitors and these headphones now sound. I did an 8 hour audio post final mix overnight with the headphones, the final mix was very good indeed, my client was blown away completely, no ear fatigue, no aches on my head or ears. Forget about these being pro budget headphones, they're good period!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good price\quality ratio 28 Aug 2011
Verified Purchase
These are my first Headphones and all I can say is they are very good, sturdy and sound quite well considering the price. The only downside is a hot feeling on your ears after 30 minutes of usage, but nothing the average person can`t tolerate. I use them mainly for bass guitar practicing at home and it almost seems I am playing a different way since I can hear every detail in the sound and therefore improve my technique to achieve a clean sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent headphones with flat response design 8 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase
I bought these headphones to use on a kindle streaming in high bandwidth from spotify. They sound excellent. Good volume, nice flat response, you hear music how the producer intended without the colouration, booming bass, harmonics etc. that some people like, each to their own, I like a flat response. These headphones are excellent value and are significantly better sound quality than my older Sennheisers that cost more. These are also closed and are very good at keeping the music in your ears without irritating others and keeping others noises from irritating you. They are very comfortable and light. You need an adapter to plug into the kindle or ipad. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flat response - perfect for home studio 3 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase
These are comfortable to wear and they seem well-made. But best of all, the sound quality is first rate - you don't want any additional bass response for listening back to recorded material. These headphones are a good back up for your studio monitors because they seem to just deliver the captured sound with precision - and they don't cost £500.

I was looking for a reasonably priced pair of headphones and decided to view products with the most feedback and rating.

I would highly recommend these headphones if you produce music and want to listen to your tracks on a professional level, without any enhancement, to get a true-to-production listening on your tracks.
It fits comfortably over your head and even adjusts to your size, and can also block out some sound outside of the headphones.

Tip: if you're buying headphones in hope to create music for the first time, then do some research. In fact, research a LOT. Research everything: the soft and hardware's of your computer, your digital audio workstation (music producing software), your knowledge, how tough it really is to produce music theoretically, practically and technologically.

Don't be put off by that slightly pessimistic tip, though. It's just to prepare you for the world of music production, and it WILL save you a lot of time and money if you research everything before you buy.

I really wouldn't suggest buying something that doesn't say "flat response" within the title of the product.
This is because if you make music through a bass or any frequency enhanced pair of headphones, then when you listen to the track on another pair, on some monitors or even in your car, then it will not sound like it did when making it. You'll have to consider the factors of what you're listening through, where you are when listening, what sort of wiring is used especially; all things scientific. But in any case, and all you need to know is: always buy a pair of "flat response" headphones, because the frequencies will be adjusted to 0dB with no sort of equalisation.
