I have been through a few different sets of earbud-style earphones lately, and have come to appreciate certain design nuances that are more important to me than others.

I know Audio-Technica to be a relatively premium brand, and not to be confused with a certain supermarket's own-brand similarly named line of products. I knew they would be good, but I wanted to be able to discern whether the price feels justified based on my prior experiences.

The colour of the set doesn't bother me, but the thing you first notice is the curious "C" shaped protrusions from the buds. These are designed to hook into your ears to provide some added stability. You might not think it, but they do actually work. The effect is subtle but it helps to counter the downward-pull of gravity that might otherwise loosen the buds from your ears.

There are three different sized pairs of "C-tip" insert, so you can tailor them to your particular ears. As are there three additional different sized pairs of earbud (so 4x sets in total). These are a pleasing texture, neither too shiney nor too matted. I have found in the past that different textures of bud offer differing levels of staying-power in my ears but the ones provided with these Audio-Technicas are just about right. This is not a huge deal as you can always get alternative buds. They also provide a set of Comply-branded foam tips should you prefer to use them instead of the buds, which is a nice touch.

The earbud itself is on a pivot meaning you can angle it about to get the right fit. When it comes to in-ear earphones, getting a comfortable fit that stays in is the crucial factor, so it's good to see Audio Technica have tried their best to satisfy all ear-shapes.

I thought these earphones might make a good replacement for the original Apple ones that came with my iPhone, which broke recently. I tried a cheap pair but the sound quality was nowhere near as good as the Apple pair, and I assumed (based on the price) these would do a better job.

The positives:

(1) The unusual C-tip feature which nestles inside your ear takes a bit of getting used to (and looks a bit strange) but once in place it really does make the earphones feel more secure. The earphones come with spare tips inside a handy carrying pouch.
(2) The flat cable really does seem to eliminate tangling (a bug bear of mine as I tend to just shove my headphones in my bag when not using them).

The not-so-positives:

(1) For me the sound quality really wasn't as good as my original Apple earphones. I tried various types of music and they all sounded 'tinny'.
(2) The price! I was shocked when I saw how much these retail for and I really would recommend trying cheaper (and possibly more expensive) alternatives in a shop in order to get the sound quality and fit that's right for you.

So, although they have some good features, overall I feel these earphones are overpriced for the quality they deliver.

The headphones appear to be really quite well put together and are quite stylish, although a little bulky-looking due to the latex prong that sticks up from the mid section - it's interestingly odd but seems to work.

The fit is good - obviously the latex 'clings' better than smooth plastic - they are comfy too, and although the earphones are a little heavier than I would have liked, they are by no means excessively heavy.

The sound quality overall is better than I thought, although the bass quality could be slightly better, but for everyday use I wouldn't quibble. Overall they are a neat, stylish and good quality set of earphones, but admittedly the price is rather steep. I'd have been happy paying around half the RRP.

With the ATH-CKX7iS headphones you get a carry pouch, Comply foam tips, silicone ear tips & C-tips. Depending on the device they are connected to, you should also enjoy in-line control with microphone for answering and ending calls, controlling music and video playback.

The C-tip configuration nestles within the ear where it locks in place for extra stability, but my wife - who has been using these headphones every day for at least a month now - found this to be a little uncomfortable and took the option of removing the C-tip. The 'stay-in-place' element no longer applies and as a result the earbuds often fall out, but of the two options she has found this to be the preferable one.

In part to compensate, the 360 degree rotating eartip adjusts to the unique angle of your ear canal for personalised fit and better sound isolation, and in this regard they have proved highly satisfactory.

A point worth mentioning is the mini-jack plug, which is of an L-shape design and seems far more durable than the type often found in cheaper alternatives. It looks and feels as if it will last. The flat cable eliminates annoying tangles and in theory will last longer.

Enhanced driver system delivers clear, undistorted music even at high volume, another benefit of the employment of high-quality components.

Overall these are hard to fault but the current price is a bit of an eyebrow-raiser. I'm not aware of anything as good at a lower price, however.
