Huge Sound, Small Size

Audioengine 5 is a full-size speaker system in a bookshelf-sized package. Internal power amps eliminate the need to connect the Audioengine 5 to a bulky stereo receiver or power amplifier. And with built-in subwoofer ports, the Audioengine 5 adds incredible low-end bass without the need for an external subwoofer.

Designed for optimal ease of setup and versatility, the Audioengine 5 has a built-in power port for iPod charging while listening to your music, watching movies, or playing games. Plug an Apple Universal Dock or iPod directly into the Audioengine Combo Port and you're ready to rock (or roll). The Combo Port charger is compatible with the nano and video iPod as well as all other products that charge via USB

With an AC power jack in the rear panel, the Audioengine 5 provides the ability to stream music from your laptop directly to the speakers through Apple's Airport Express. The rear panel AC outlet is also ideal for providing power to other portable and home A/V equipment. A 2nd auxiliary mini-jack is located nearby for audio input from the Airport Express or other products. We've also included plenty of cables in a drawstring bag to connect all your gear.

For listening to real stereo sound Audioengine is all you need. If you want awesome speakers for your portable music player, game console, TV or DVD player but don't want a bulky receiver/amp hogging up your space, the Audioengine 5 system does the job.

3.0 out of 5 stars great great sound quality but flawed 21 Oct 2009
By Quaddy
these are superb sounding speakers, with nice build quality inside and out.

in the budget that these are you most likely wont get a better sounding pair

i have the glossy white, and these match my white intel imac down to the ground

however, there is one issue which has plagued me from day one = the auto sleep feature.

now in my opinion they have marred a top quality product and placed it squarely in the realm of gimmikery with this feature

i will pass comment on how this feature affects me...

the audio feed will, without exception goto sleep (turn off) after 10 minutes, now i dont know if its supposed to be ten minutes of inactivity (ie, no audio feed being recognized) but on mine, they do it without fail, even if i am half way through an album

not only does the music go off, it does it with a loud and annoying burst of static noise as it cuts out, enough to give you a start whilst listening to a more relaxed musical choice.

then in order to resume your listening, you have to crank up either the source volume or the volume on the speakers themselves (depends how you have them set up) to a very loud increment so that the active sleep circuitry re-engages, of course at this point after 5-10 seconds, they come back on full throttle very loud, again, enough to give you or your household/neighbours a start this time.

therein lies my one and only bugbear with these speakers, i have emailed audioengine support numerous times and of course, whilst they are helpful and courteous, always provide a long list of other things that may be at fault in the chain, and then proceed to say if you are in the continental united states (which they are, and i am not) then they allude to being able to help some more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Far too good for iPods. 19 Aug 2008
Verified Purchase
These are excellent speakers. No flaws at all - look amazing (I have the white ones, I'm sure the black ones look good too). The bass is astounding for bookshelf speakers, I haven't even bothered wiring in my subwoofer. The clarity of the sound is phenomenal, even at high volume - I turned it up as much as I dared, and it still sounded perfect, no distortion like with cheaper speakers.

They come felt bags, instead of plastic wrappers - so classy. I love every bit of them - even the small blue LED to show power: on most speakers the LEDs are stupidly bright so you have to turn them off at night or be blinded, with these it's nice and mellow.

These are the best bookshelf speakers you'll get for 200 pounds.
