Book Description

31 Mar 2000
Beardsley's work is looked at alongside the work of contemporaries such as Oscar Wilde, Max Beerbohm and W.B. Yeats and against the backdrop of the artistic, literary and social life of fin-de-siecle London, Dieppe and Paris. In addition to the drawings, the book includes examples of Beardsley's innovative book binding, prints and posters, revealing a gallery of portraits and photographs from that decadent period, the "Naughty Nineties." It also explores the diverse influences, such as ancient Greek vase painting and Japanese prints, upon which the young artist freely drew in the formation of his own style.

Amazon Review

Fin-de-siecle artist Aubrey Beardsley died tragically young of tuberculosis at the age of 25, but he left an enormous body of work behind which has come to symbolise the decadence of the 1890s. Drawings, poster designs, bookbindings-- there was little that Beardsley's famous gold-nibbed pen could not illustrate--and his astonishing range of expression found a willing audience in the more outré circles of the "Naughty Nineties".

Famed for his outrageous erotic drawings--many of which adorned such artistic magazines as The Savoy and the Yellow Book--Beardsley pushed public opinion to the limit with his sequence of graphic illustrations for Aristophanes' Lysistrata, which were deemed obscene and remained unpublished until 1966.

Biographer Stephen Calloway has closely scrutinised Beardsley's life in the light of his subversive drawings and this in-depth, superbly illustrated book has been published to coincide with the Calloway-curated centenary exhibition held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London during autumn 1998. --Catherine Taylor --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review quote
"Calloway's...book is bold, intelligent, and easily the most effective in displaying the range of Beardsley's imagination." JOAN SMITH, FINANICAL TIMES --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Informative 9 Feb 2011
By lizzee
Format:Paperback
This is great for detailed information on Beardsley's life, his personality, friends and the society in which he mixed, with many interesting photographs. There are lots of examples of his drawings, but this is not a comprehensive selection. I would love the book to have had more plates of his designs. Fortunately, I have other books with more of his work in, but this is certainly an essential book for any Beardsley fan.
