**UPDATE**
Right, well it's been well and truly hot for a week and I I've got to say I'm not sure how effective the evaporative cooling is. To be honest I do not see much in the way of cooling from the unit, once the air temp in my office reaches 28 or more (which it now has). The problem is I guess that the water temp rises rapidly, as the ice blocks melt quickly at these temps.
It still works brilliantly as a fan, with the remote being very handy too. But I think I'm off to bite the bullet, so to speak, and get a proper air conditioner.
**UPDATE END**
I'll update this later in the summer when it has had a sterner test of its abilities. For the time being I'm pretty pleased. I sit in a south facing office that gets absurdly hot even before summer kicks in. Think tropics style heat in the summer. So faced with option of working "au natural" or sweating throughout the working day I decided purchasing something to cool the office down instead.
I didn't want to purchase an air conditioning unit, largely due to the cost of running them. However a fan alone is not enough, the cheapo oscillating fan just didn't cut the mustard. The old fan seemed to only have fast, very fast and supersonic speeds, and also was at face height - fine for having in the corner of large room but irritating in an office.
So, saw this and thought I'd take a punt. Seems to be made well enough, although as you would expect is made of plastic. Overall I think it looks pretty neat, and size wise is ok too, being about 20cm wide (30 at the base) and sticking above my desk by about 20cm (the fan part though finishes at about desk height). The LED control panel works well, as does the remote (all controls accessible from the remote too). You can see what mode you are in, of which there are a few to choose from.
The fan works well and the slow speed, pushing out a nice gentle breeze, and has three settings going up to the strongest which pushes out a fair volume of air. The blades on the front move to create the same effect as the oscillating fan, and can be kept in a fixed position if you prefer (again controllable via the remote). The evaporative cooling does appear to work, you have to wait a few minutes for it to start to take effect but once it does you feel the cooler air come through. Now the ambient temperature in my office is about 23 at the moment, so will have to wait and see if it still works when the room is around 30 or more. I'll update once it gets hotter, but the ice pack that comes with it should help.
Only issue so far is that it does not remember the setting you were on, so always seems to start back up in the non-cooling, non-moving fast fan setting. Reason this is irritating is that I could have bought a timer switch, plugged the fan into this and had it come on in cooling mode before I get into the office. However as you are supposed to have a window open then this is probably not a good idea anyway, just would have been nice to try (it does have a sleep timer though).
